    2013 z3 ballast pump

Hello, I have the surf ballast system on my 2013 Z3. Today the rear ballast on the port side would not fill up with water. I lifted up the middle section piece to get a better look at the pumps. The particular pump for the ballast that wasn't filling up was making the noise like it was running. And you could feel water running up to it through the hose and back out through the hose. I took the top section of the pump off and it was bringing water in and the little spiral fins(not sure what to call them) on the pump were rotating also but the ballast was dry as a bone. So it looked like to me the pump was pumping water through the pump and pumping it out through the black hose up to the ballast but it is like it stopped there or didn't have enough juice to pump the water all the way up to the ballast....Any thought's or ideas??

Is it a newer build 2013 with the 1-1/8" hose and T1200 pumps, or an early build with T800 pumps and 3/4" hose? Has it worked in the past, and now you find it not working? Take the fill hose off the bag and cycle it on and off to see if it's just an airlock. Check to make sure the valve on the thruhull is on (I assume it is since you said its "bringing water in"). The hose goes from the pump to a T which splits the water to the hard tank. So until the hard tank is full, you may not see a lot of water coming out of the fill hose that is attached to the bag. On mine I have a reduced water flow to the bag, then once the hard tank is full, all of the water is diverted to the bag and the flow to the bag increases. Did you pull the hose off the bag to verify if any water was coming out? If it's an airlock, and the pump is turning on correctly, shut off the valve on the thruhull, then pull the pump motor out of the housing (like you did), turn the valve back on and verify that water is coming up through the thru-hull into the bilge. Turn the valve off again, then put the pump motor back in the housing, turn the valve back on, and that should fix the airlock. If not, I would suspect some obstruction in the hose, if you have verified that the water is not simply being diverted to the hard tank.

It is an early build with t800 pumps. Yes, it has worked numerous times in the past, today was the first time it did not. I took both fill hoses off of the bag but did not really "cycle" it on and off...I will try this. Yes, the valve on the pump thruhull is on. I did pull the fill hoses off the bag with the pump on and no water was coming out. I will try the everything that you said about the air-lock maybe that is the problem. Thanks man

It is probably air locking. I have one that does it. Mine is the front port. Lift the floor and turn the sea c o c k off for the offending pump. Pull the center cartridge out of the pump. You will probably find no water inside. If so you are air locking. Open the sea c o c k and close quickly to fill the pump body. Put the cartridge back in and it will work fine. My dealer rerouted the fill line and it hasn't done it since.

I frequently get weeds stuck in mine. If you have a weedy lake, you may want to check for pluggage in the output. I had some jambed in there once.
