    Budget Build Tige?

After a couple long years, I am finally getting back into the market to buy a Tige. In 2011 we ordered a new RZ2 through Hyperactive in Calgary, but had to let it go due to some pretty challenging circumstances on the home front. I have to acknowledge Hyperactive and TigeCanuck for being a class act through the whole ordeal.

I've saved my rupees and am slowly getting myself ready to buy my Tige.... finally!

I was initially looking at a used boat, but I do intend to buy through the dealer, so my options could be limited, depending on what's available. I have about $75k CDN to spend and I refuse to borrow money for a boat, which leaves me a bit shy of a new boat. However I was curious if I could do a budget build of a new RZ2 or Z3 and still be in the ball park? I'm the kind of guy who really likes to tinker with his toys, so whether it means adding the ballast later, or the stereo or upgrading the VX or the trailer wheels - I figured maybe a budget build would be a good idea? Just wondering if you guys could provide advice as to which features are MUST HAVES up front and aren't possible to add later. (To be honest, I could even live without the Alpha Z but I know that would kill re-sale)

Oh - and my sole concern is surfing! I do the other stuff too, but any boat would be good enough for my level of skill in those activities.

I've been keeping an eye on the site for a long time, and its nice to know I'm getting back into the game Timeframe for the purchase is anytime before next spring.

I will tell you right now you can save lots of money by building without all the add-ins. I ordered my boat without a stereo and w out board racks and I saved thousands of dollars. I would order with ballast though. When you order with ballast it automatically comes with dual battery switch and will save you lots of time not wiring it or installing the ballast. Don't cheap out on the alpha z, it's a great tower. I added a pretty large stereo and bought racks from a guy here on the forum and even added under water lights and led rings on all the speakers. I'm confident I saved anywhere from 12-15 thousand doing all this myself instead of ordering from the factory. I would def. go the route your thinking about

Save a bunch of money on speakers and buy these Wetsounds DoubleUp

This is a great system with the Pro60 horns throwing way back and the MB8s providing near field and lots of mid bass.

Whether you buy those or not, you can get some killer deals on used marine audio from people upgrading.

        Haha... nice try!

I would look at those if I already had the boat sitting in the driveway. I used to do car audio install as a kid, so that is sort of in my blood. I still like doing that stuff, so a full on stereo build down the line would be alright in my books. So long as wires are run where they need to be, that is really the only challenge.

As for ballast, it seems like everyone is upgrading their ballast immediately after they buy anyways.... I assume some bags / tanks are harder to swap than others?

Just another note - 22 feet is about my ideal size. My truck (Avalanche) won't pull much more than an RZ2, and even at that it will need some upgrading. Anything less than 22 feet is just too small for me. My current 19 footer has always been too small. I'm curious to see if the new RZ2's are going to weigh a lot more than the old ones, as that might force me into a new truck. If I have to borrow money, I'd prefer it be on a truck and not a boat.

Thanks for the offer. I am looking for something no older than 2010. I really like the Tige Touch. However the loss of the VisionAir seat following 2011 is surprisingly weighing on me. As stupid as it sounds, that is the thing that initially put Tige above the competition for me I don't see why it is so hard to find another seat like it.

Budget wise I would order without ballast, it's easy to add and with TigeTouch you don't have to worry about cutting into the dash to add switches, so it will look stock. You might be able to find a local upholstery shop to do the bimini a little less than the factory price but you proably don't need it in Canada.

X2 on the seat, I love my visionair seat. If it breaks I'm taking it to a local upholstery guy to mend it.

I have had both seats, although I loved the vision air for cruising I hated it for the bolster and I use the bolster all the time. The regular seat bolster is so much nicer.

I really, really dislike the bolster on the Vision Air. And I always drive with the bolster. I inquired about buying one of the new model Tige captain's chairs and was told it would be incompatible with older bases. I really would love to replace that seat.

So imhop JohnnieMo, you are not missing out on much.

I would buy a boat without the alpha z in an instant, and I think if you had a good aftermarket tower, it would not hurt resale. But I am less enthused about the Alpha Z because of the speaker placement and its height is lower than I would like.

Out of curiosity, how much is an Alpha Z from the factory? I thought I was told once that it was 8K or more. Am I hallucinating? That makes a 4K Samson all the more appetizing. If the price were equal, do the factory tower. The boat that would kill resale is the one that had the Alpha Z tower on it originally, and then was swapped out. As long as you can prove you bought it that way, I doubt it would hurt resale much. And you can get spinner racks for a lot less than $2,000 each.

And another odd thought: go without a tower at all if you primarily surf. It makes getting up a tiny bit more difficult, but if you surf without the rope, what good is a tower?

I'm not sure what the Alpha Z costs. I do know they have an alternate tower (the same as on the R20) which I don't mind. I know a lot of people are in love with the Alpha Z, and I'm sure its a great tower, but when you compare a tower, to say the cost of a new Honda Civic..... you start seeing that it might not be worth it. I wouldn't go without a tower, but I might opt for the cheaper of the two. Here is a picture I came across the the RZ2 tower.... looks fine to be. To be clear, I'm not sure if this is a factory option, or just a one off.

                            rz2Tower2.jpg

I think the biggest savings for me is likely on the trailer, the stereo and the ballast. If everyone is picking up custom sacs after the fact, I don't see why I would buy it all up front just to swap it later.

Regarding the VisionAir, I've never used one on the water, so you guys may be on to something there.

I like that tower. It looks like there's round down-tubes on the front of it also, which means there's more options for accessories than the Alpha-z.
