Scratches on hull from trailer wheel wells

Has anyone else had this issue? On my RZR I first noticed the port side had scratches on the hull after the second time out, I figured out there was a screw that was poking through the carpeted section on the wheel well of the trailer. I replaced with a shorter screw and mentioned it to the dealer when I had it in for the 20 hour service. The dealer said it was an easy repair, but never fixed it.

I was just planning on repairing the gel coat myself then, but its hard to reach behind the wheel well and I keep putting it off.

Over the weekend I was cleaning the boat and saw the exact same on the starboard side now. The carpet piece of wood that attaches to the wheel well is gone and the rough edge of the screw hole gouged the gel coat pretty bad.

Who should be responsible for this, Boatmate? the dealer? Tige? Or is this just unfortunate and I should just fix everything and be done with it?

They fixed one spot.

I would say that should be warranty and the dealer should fix it. Whether they bill it back to Tige or Boatmate shouldn't be your problem.

How deep are you dipping your trailers? I know I have a different boat and different trailer but my boat does not get close to the wheel fenders. My boat rides up the bunks when I drive it on the trailer and it keeps it centered there for when I winch it up.

Oh yeah, I also agree with boardman, I had to get my bunks re-carpeted after 20 hours. For some reason the carpet wore off the edge of the bunks super quick. I've got 160 hrs on the boat now and the carpet is in great shape and I haven't adjusted my loading technique from the first 20 hours, I still load it like Ben Pigeon showed me.

The boat sits between the wheel wells, Im sure the scratches are after the boat is winched up and coming out of the water, the boat settles in between the wells. The carpeted wells should protect the hull, but not when there is a screw sticking through or when the carpeted piece is missing.

My dealer is 2.5 hours away and I have already have several issues with them, so I started the gel coat repair last night.

I think this may be an issue with BoatMate. We took delivery of our new Z1 a couple of weeks ago and I noticed that I could see light between the wheel well and the carpeted "protector", this was on the 2nd trip out. I found that a few screws were loose. I am suprised that they use such small screws and screw directly into the sheet steel. I feel these should be through bolted and would be better with smooth carriage head bolts. We already have this on our punch list with our dealer. Good luck.

I'm going to have to check mine for this as I have the 20 hour on Wednesday. I know on mine I have very little space between the fenders. Maybe and inch eachside if it's perfectly centered. Usually ends up 1/2 inch one side and 1 and 1/2 the other. Not much at al, if there is a screw hanging out its gonna get the hull.

I'm not arguing that you don't have a valid claim against Boatmate but if the boat uses the carpeted sections of the wheel wells to settle when pulling out if the water then you may be putting the trailer in too deep, or the trailer bunks might not be positioned perfectly. My boat has about 2-3 inches between the hull and wheel covers but it gets centered on the bunks first and doesn't settle at all when pulling out of the water, it's already resting on the bunks before I pull it out of the water.

I have the same issue on my trailer now....had that issue on my boatmate when I had the Malibu. Scratched the crap out of the hull where that 45 degree angled bunk comes in....the carpet wears super fast there.

with the Z3's on a boatmate (14" tires), you can barely get a finger between the hull and fenders on either side, so I'd guess 3/8"-1/2" inch clearance on either side.
