I believe that I was told any sort of Dexron III Transmission fluid will work (the red stuff that GM sells). I just changed mine with Mercruiser transmission fluid that the Ski Dock in Austin recommended- still runs like butter!
I believe that Bog and Runne both have merc set-ups while most newer owners have Marine Power. Do they both use the Walter V-drive? Or do all V-drives use the same fluid? I wonder when one suggestion is for gear oil and the other is for transmisison fluid, if one of you is talking about your transmission and the other is refering to V-drive.
If we are talking about a Walter V-drive then you should be using 30 wt. non-detergent motor oil. That is per the Walter manual found on the download section of this web site. But, the transmissions do take transmisssion fluid.
I have a Hurth Transamission and a V-drive that is not A Walter V Drive. I think it is a Borg Warner but not having the manuals here I cant say for sure. I have a marine Power 340 HP.
xpjim1, my '04 marine power definately has the Walter V-drive, so I would be surprised if it changed between years. I would think that it would be the same.
In the Early 05 24V's they switched to ZF Hurth. My boat has a manufacture date of 7/04. They went back quickly to Walter V-Drive. I know for sure since I had the V Drive bolts back out when I first got my boat that left me dead in the water. I had that repaired as it was a known issue and 2 trips later my tranny went out. I spoke with TIGE who said they went back to Walter V Drives. My Transmission manual is from ZF Hurth.
Interesting- I'm sure your are right. When you deal with a problem, you always learn more about it. When you get a chance to check your manual, post what type fluid it takes. The info available on here to everyone is valuable.
I have a problem to find single weight sae 30W oil. Only multigrade oils available
here in europe. does anyone know if I can put 25W-40 or 10W-30 oil into Walter
V-Drive. And interested to know why / why not?
Once the multigrade is warm, it will be about the weight of the second number.
10W-30 is a 10W oil that is no thinner than a 30W oil once to operating temp. I would try and find a straight weight still. No one over there will even order you any?
Ok, I'll be a moron here (nothing new for me). Which is the transmission and what is the V-drive? As I look into my engine bay it all looks like one piece to me. I can't discern a transmission. I can see where it says "velvet drive" on what I assume to be the V-drive. Doesn't look like a seperate piece to me????
Tranny is straight.....input and output inline. The V-Drive is easy to spot if you consider the name. It has an input shaft and an output shaft shaped like a V.
