Velvet drive is the transmission, the v-drive will be towards the bow of the boat from the trans. From the stern it goes engine, trans, then v-drive. If you have a marine power, the engine and trans should both be painted silver/grey which is why you might see them as one piece. If you have synchrotech, the v-drive will be blue, I'm not sure what color a standard v-drive is.

I too just changed mine and out of curiosity, did y'all that have changed your v-drive oil just get what you could out of the dipstick tube or did you actually drain it out of the bottom like the manual says??? I did not feel like getting creative enough to drain it out of the bottom so I used my oil change pump to get out what I could, close a quart.

My book on my Walter V-Drive says 1.2 Quarts of 30W non detergent oil. I use the pump and get close to a quart each time. I did change it with the drain plug when I had the back seat out doing an engine alignment. I took out just over one quart. The other thing I did notice was a magnetic plug and that had a bunch of fiber metal attached to the magnet. So it is probably good to drain it from the plug at least once a year. I change it every time I change my engine oil with the vacuum pump it is so easy to do that way. I don't feel that you can change oil to much, those items take a lot of abuse.
