The isolator is basically a "gate" will between the two batteries. It is a placed in line between the two batteries (+#1 to isloator to +#2). It is linked to the ACC of your ingition switch. When you turn the key to ACC it triggers the isolator (gate) to block power draw from battery #1 (start)thereby isolating it from battery #2 (stereo). In all other key possions, the "gate" is open and the batteries are linked together.

      Nick,

You state: "In all other key possions, the "gate" is open and the batteries are linked together."

If I have my stereo hooked to the key (only works in acc or on), then if I turn the key to off, the batteries and stereo will be off right?

What about other accessories, like the automaic bilge? ... That would be a bad thing to keep power from.

I am thinking about redoing my install, because the stereo shop messed it up. I just want to make sure that the situation can be fixed.

      Thanks,

      Robb

First off, I'm no expert. Pure amature with only my own experiences to pull from. That being said, everything should still work just fine, it's just that there is no power draw from battery #1 by battery #2. You're not turning any batteries off in ACC, your just isolating one from the other.

        I think.

          Mr. Nick E. Poo,

Did you ever get that popping/buzzing worked out?

Nick, that's what I thought. However, my other question is: If the ignition is off, there will still be power for emergeny accessories right?

              T,

I'm no expert, but I belive Nick E. Poo is correct.

I have been searching for the "best" way to wire Dual batteries for years, but it doesn't seem as there is a best way, just a bunch of ways that work equally well.

Dog- The buzzing, yes. Just a grounding issue. Handled for now. The popping, kind of. I installed an amp pop stopper and it didn't help one bit soooooo, I got all pissed off and took the pop stopper and the isolator out. I rewired everything for no isolator and viola, no pop. To date, I have yet to find the energy to get back in there and fight. I know now what is causing it, I just need to get back to it. I'm about sick of stuffing myself in the observers compartment and wiring stereo equipment.

Robb-I don't know. Everything should work just as it did before. As soon as you turn the key to OFF or ON the "gate" is opened again. It only closes when you turn the key to ACC.

I hear ya, seems like it was a 1000 degrees (sorry, no umlauts here) when I wired my tower speakers, amp and 2nd battery. That experience alone has me thinking my current setup is good for now.

Your bilge is connected directly to the battery, so it cannot be isolated. I think it is the only thing directly connected to your battery, so the only way you lose it is to have a dead battery.

This thread I started a year ago has a few good things in it, including a pic of my bilge wire.

                            Dragin,

I think you are going to beat me unless I can tweak 30+ posts out of my Rival install thread that is coming soon. I need another week to finish it. (or two).
