When I bought my boat, the seller had a reputable local used car dealership process the paperwork for us. They took the title, they received the wire, I did the bill of sale with the dealer. The seller paid a small fee to the local car dealer for their hassle (paperwork/money handling).

For the amount of money you are looking at, it might be worth it paying a little to get the help. I don't know how much it cost the seller. With that much money I was still worried about wiring alot of money without ever seeing the boat but it worked out well.

When I bought my last boat I went into the bank with the seller and asked the teller to Make out a cheque in his name right there at the counter, he was happy with that. When I sold it again I had the buyer email me a copy of the cheque he was going to give me and I called the respective bank before we met to sign over the papers. Both ways no problem.

When we sold our old centurion, I couldn't tell you how many people called from Australia. They would low ball you and tell you a story how they ship it to Australia and sell it for more. Then they would tell you what you TO DO to transfer money. Everyone Australian did that. It got to the point where if I answered the phone and heard an Australian accent, I would just hang up. Also, do get tricked into the whole craigslist scam where they ask for the current condition of the ITEM and the lowest selling cost. The also, suggest things like using a cashier check etc etc. Overall, I would stick to buyers who actually call you and want to pick up the boat personally. Those people are worried about their money too and don't want to get ripped off.

I have actually had fun with the Craigslist scammers and wasted heaps of their time. I would call them a different name each time, sometimes a male or female name. Then I would raise the price by 10k. Then I would tell them that they would need a ballast conveyor for it to work in their lake or river and it was an additional fee. I had some scammers say that was no problem. I also would ask several times how to set up PayPal so they could "pay me". I then set up a bogus account I had one guy said that he actually paid me. I would ask for a picture of them so that I know that I am not being scammed. I had all kinds of funny emails. And to finish it off I would always say "Kindly reply". For some reason every scammer on CraigsList uses this term. LOL.

When I bought my boat in April - I did not feel comfortable carrying that much cash on a 6 hour drive across Texas. I indicated that I would have a cashiers check and provided him with my bank's branch information - as well as my banker's contact info - to validate cashiers check information.

I am curios, did he give you the title right away or did he wait?

Good question Matt. After I completed the water test - we were still at the ramp. I laid out the check in the back of my Denali. He signed the Bill of Sale and Title right in front of me - then I handed him the check.

I think we had a good level of trust that we had built up over the 6 weeks we were talking/emailing as we were waiting for the weather to warm up for the water test. I know I completed my due diligence on the owner and I'm sure he had done the same.

Just an update to this thread. I sold my boat and the customers happened to bank at the same bank I do so it was an easy transaction.

Another RZ2, I was happy with that and still like the look. I just need to figure out if I am going to do a 2013 or 2014.

I am interested to see if the 2014 RZ2 gets a design ala Z3 hull.

I would do a wire transfer or have the buyer meet you at your bank with cash.
