Transport with Cover on or Off ?

Hey guys,

I picked up my new Z3 last week and it came with the cover from Tige. My dealer advised me not to transport it with the cover on as the cover can mark up the boat while driving.

What is your guys experience ? I am heading out this weekend and wanted some input if I should pull it with or without the cover ?

I usually tow with mine on. Towed from Arizona to South Dakota with it on and haven't noticed any marks.

I tow with it off.When we go camping and it is down a dusty road, i stop before the dirt road then put my cover on to keep as clean as possible (moving 5-15 mph). One year it was raining and i towed with cover on (about 2.5 hour drive) it marked up the side of my boat. It polished off but took awhile.....

When I bought my boat the dealer said to travel without the cover on. He did suggest that if it is rainy that they carry a roll of stretch wrap and make a few wraps around the boat to allow the cover to be put on and avoid the rub marks. Haven't had to try it yet but certainly better than all the grime in the boat.

For short trips to the lake I tow without but longer trips I tow with the cover on to keep the inside clean. I towed from TX to WA with the cover on and it didn't leave marks. I did make sure it was very tight so it didn't shift or have a chance to move, and I used the straps by the windshield to keep that section down as well.

When I towed the boat home he wrapped with shrink wrap where the cover rides and had no issues, but that was only 2 hour drive and I'm looking at a full day of travel tomorrow.

I'm going to go with off and hope for no rain !

On. It does leave a little mark at one or two points but they buff out fairly easily. Now I just leave them and clean them up at the end of the season...nobody really notices them except me. If I had a brand new boat I would probably be a little more anal; however, after my daughters friend scratched the crap out of the transom with a wakeboard I really don't notice them.

The reality is that you are trading a few superficial marks for generalized wear and scruffiness of the interior of the boat. Things get way dustier without it and all that dust goes into your carpet, seat seams etc where they slowly cause damage and make you use more cleaners on your vinyl.

I tow with the cover off but learnt from my Dad to carry a roll of wrap($18 @ Costco) in the truck for this exact reason, I haven't had to use it yet but I also like the "blow dry" effect on the carpet on the way home at the end of the day. My biggest concern is more the dust between the cover and the Gelcoat rather than just the cover.

On, keeps the bugs off the windows and other parts of the boat. IMO

We always have it on. Travel up to 70mph 65 miles to lake. Never have an issue.

Short trips; OFF.
Long Trips (6 hours) with good weather forecast; OFF.

Long Trips with bad weather; ON.
Short/Long Trips when I use the boat as an extended "luggage zone" to have more room in my tow vehicle; ON.
That way I don't have to worry about theft if/when we stop for lunch/gas....

The costco wrap is a great idea because at highway speeds my cover will balloon/cinch up and gelcoat gets a rash. The wrap could take the rubbin'. That would also be a great idea to wrap the tower because it really is an effective bug killer/collector at highway speeds.

The rash can be buffed out, it's not horrible-just annoying.

I use an Evolution cover (www.evolutioncovers.com) on the Z3, and I had one on my previous boat as well. They are a couple hundred more than the stock cover, but I think the materials are better and it fits very tightly and doesn't use/need poles. I like to tow with cover on for multiple reasons (dirt/dust, losing gear or seat covers, and to protect the windshield from rocks).
