    Trailer Surge Brake upgrade...

    I wrote up an article and did a video of an upgrade I did over a year ago. I have been towing stuff all around preparing for the season and the Endless Wave Tour and it is amazing the difference when towing the 24Ve vs my other trailers, especially the Z3 of about the same size using the standard surge brakes.

    Anyway, it was well worth it.

    Nice video, great information. I need to consider this upgrade for next season.

    One of my only regrets in my research/ordering back in 2009 was the decision to go with surge brakes. I was persuaded by some of the posts here and information elsewhere along the lines of electric brakes are great when they work. I suspect electric brake problems are more prolific is salt, which is not an issue for our fresh water use.

    When we got a 28 foot travel trailer a few years ago, the brakes were of course electric. The very first time I towed that trailer I was blown away at how responsive and how much additional control electric brakes provided. I felt more comfortable slowing that trailer that greatly outweighed our 09 RZ2. If a little sway developed, rather then accelerate to remove, I just tapped the manual trailer brake control and, presto, no more sway. When I depressed the brake pedal, there was no longer that 1 or so second "oh sh ite" moment while you wait for the surge to kick in. Night and day difference between surge and electric imop.

    For anyone researching a new fresh water boat/trailer, go electric!!

    For me, I will spend this coming season griping about my surge breaks and eyeing this upgrade. Thanks again Ragboy for pointing out cool equipment and upgrades

      Thats a very nice upgrade for sure vs surge brakes, Ive never been a fan of surge brakes or the hitches. But for the price I'll throw out one another option. You might (depending on your axle) be able to replace the hydraulic brake set up and revert back to a full electric drum brake set up for less than half of the price of the pump. All depends on what axle you have and if both axles have brakes on them or just one axle. Granted the pump will provide more pressure to the brakes than the conventional electric/mag style will, but full electric brakes work very well and parts are easy to come by. Plus they are a pretty simple install since new back plates come fully assembled.
