    Carlisle Tires

I know this has been discussed before because I just read threw the whole tire blow out thread and remembered that I have Carlisle Tires. I have had no problems yet (knock on wood) however I think I would like to talk to Carlisle to see if there is a bad lot number or time frame.

Does anybody have a good contact number for them?

No. I put on a set of Goodyears at the start of last season. Very happy with them. They track better, they feel like they ride better, they look like they ride better, they balanced better and I haven't had a blow out yet. I've had 4 blow outs so far. All were Carlisle. I picked the Goodyears up at the Tire Rack along with a set of Pirelli's for the truck and had the guys at Reno Vulcanizing put them all on that day. I'm sure you've seen Tire Rack adds in any car magazine. The distribution facility is a block and a half from where I work in Sparks (basically arcoss the street from Summit Racing). Great prices and you can pick them up yourself so that you don't have to pay shipping. Just have your favorite tire guy mount them for you. My favorite is Reno Vulc. over on Prater. Good guys that do good work at a fair price. That's all you can ask.

PS- I've noticed all the summer birds have returned. It's time.

I guess what I'm wondering is, is there a bad lot or all Carlisle's just junk?

                  rushin,
why take a chance? With all the issues on numerous web sites having to do with boats and travel trailers discussing these tires blowing up and comming apart, do you want them on your trailer while towing your boat? You may be lucky and then maybe buying time!
Don't mess with given odds! If you have them, watch them very close and don't drive too fast. Replace them as soon as you can! The sad part about all this is that the trailer manufrs. instead of going with quality go with the cheap (less expensive) tires!

                    Trailer Tires

I'm back after a long winter. Anyway I had nothing but headaches with the Carlisle Tires but they (Goodyear) did make it right with me money wise. I still will not put Carlisle tires on anything.

Hey Morry, our resident tire guy, long time no hear. Hope all is well. I'm a little confused about your post. You say "they (Goodyear) did make it right" with you. If I'm reading this correctly, do you mean to say that Carlisle is a subsidiary of Goodyear? Am I trying a little too hard here? Either way, I'm with you. I gave Carlisle their chance and they struck out. So far I love my Goodyears.

                        GY / Carlisle

In my case the Carlisle tires were made by Goodyear. They were made to the Carlisle specs however. At least that was what I was told by Goodyear. Yes I was surprised that GY made them because GY makes a good tire.

Hmmm, interesting. Did GY buy out Carlisle at some point or has it always been that way?

I was told that Goodyear did buy out Carlisle I believe around 2001/2002. My 1999 Extreme trailer came with bias ply Carlisle's. The front two tires burned up (prematurely wore out) as my axle was misaligned from the factory. Extreme aligned the front axle and replace all 4 tires with Carlisle’s radials and charged me $40 each. They claimed the warranty expired and that I failed to return the trailer the first year for inspection as stipulated in the purchase. That was a negotiated price after they first attempted to charge retail. Did not sit well with me either way, not to mention the factory is 110 miles away, makes dropping by for an ‘inspection’ inconvenient.

As it turned out, the next season, the axle realignment was not properly aligned, thus the Carlisle radials experience unusual tread wear. A mono-leaf spring broke as a result of being welded from Extreme when they were re-aligning from my first repair. Spring fracture occurred on a trip when I was 400 miles from home. Had to spend a vacation day hunting for some spring to work, found one in Carson City Nevada. Found a 4 leaf that would work, not ideal but seemed safe and salvaged the trip. Do you think Extreme paid for the spring repair?? I negotiated a reduced price on disc brake conversion and spare tire rack.

Goodyear is the parent company of Carlisle or at least Goodyear paid me for the Carlisle's.

Talked to Carlisle and learned that they were in the process of being purchased by Goodyear and if I sent the tires in and bought Goodyear Marathon’s that I would be reimbursed, which was one of the best things to come from this ordeal.

Oh, the spare tire rack weld broke first time out during a river trip, had to return to Extreme for the repair and when I picked up the trailer they changed the mono leaf to a 4 leaf suspension without discussion. Rides a bit higher and firmer but have not had alignment issue.

Not sure you asked, however my recommendation is the Goodyear’s with a spare. I bought mine from America’s Tire/ Discount Tire center and I bought the Tire certificates after my third flat. America’s /Discount Tires are near most boating destinations and they warranty the tires. Had three flats last year, caught nails at Havasu on two different trips and once at Lake Mead. Never believed in those cert’s until last years woes. Having said that, when I was America’s Tire last time I did see some off brand trailer tires with a cool looking tread design at a reduced cost, maybe if I was looking at replacing them all I might consider them, not Carlisle’s I believe they were Maxxis or Greenball Towmasters, the tire folks speak highly of both them. I have found that even the Goodyear's will take a nail, just ask Jimmy Johnson and the 48 team.

I'm really not too sure what that means.
