    Thoughts on black boats?

    Hey guys,

In the process of building a few different Z1's right now and wanted your opinion on black boats. I have black cars and know that they look great when clean, but hard to keep them clean. My biggest concern for the black gel coat is swirl marks. Does the black gel coat on a boat get swirl marks as easily as cars?

This is an option we are looking at right now.

I only have a little black but don't get the swirl marks. I know several on here love black boats.

    Nice looking combination.

Nothing changes. Black shows everything but looks the best on the water.

Mine is partially black and it's definatly harder to keep clean and polished. I used to have dark blue too and that was difficult but not as hard. I end up polishing mine out with 3M Finesse it at least twice a season and we always wipe the boat down after use with a vinegar/water solution. Day trips aren't bad but it's those multi-day trips that are the worst. BUT I like black. Nothing looks better when it's clean. Also, it's not like paint. It's easier IMHO to polish and not get the swirls.

My previous boat had a black main panel and transom. Swirl marks were not an issue, but water spots were. Looked great when clean, but cleaning was harder for sure. My trips are mostly multi-day and in hot (100+) conditions, so the spots bake on pretty good. My next boat was/is almost all white.

Another thing -- I don't think I'd ever get black on the deck. Just too hot to the touch (but, then again, I'm usually out in really hot weather).

          Good luck with the purchase.

I live in Wisconsin, so the summers here aren't extremely hot. The boat will be kept on a lift, so cleaning the boat will definitely be more of a chore.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

We had quite a hot summer this past, but coming from Texas, I don't find the summers here to be that bad.

If it's what you want go for it! A black boat is easier to keep up than a black truck IMHO.

As stated black is harder to keep clean but looks amazing. As soon as you get the boat throw a coat of wax on it and it will help a ton. I too would avoid the black top deck and change that to white.

Boat looks great. Just get you some HotSauce. I don't care what color my boat is as long as it is black

agree with consensus above -- harder to keep clean but looks better.

Once additional thing -- it is no big deal to polish a boat. The gel coat on a boat is WAY thicker than the clear coat on a car. So polish away!
