    water in boat

    We went out for our first day in boat overall great day really windy today.
    I have a dumb question We got a lot of water in the front of the boat between the very front seats. My wife freaked out thinking that we have a leak. It slowly wet the carpet back to the drivers seat. We did not have any water come over the front so I am not sure where it came from. I checked the motor compartment and there was none no water there. I turned on the bilge but never saw any water pump out. The carpet stayed very wet all day. Is this anything to be concerned about? Any ideas ? Thanks Brian

    Water could be coming in around the bow eye if not sealed correctly.

      A couple of thoughts come to mind depending on your boat model and year which will suggest what type of equipment and accessories.

      Could be a speedometer leak if you have the pitot pick up type.

      If you have a heater, it could be a leak in the heater core or hoses for it.

      Any sound possible?

          I would use a garden house and check the front nav lights as well as the bow eye like lee said.
          Have somebody in the boat with the front cushion off or open. Then can stick their hand around the side and feel front any water coming in.

          Just a thought, if you are getting that much water in the hull of the boat that it is soaking up to the carpet, you should off seen a lot come out of the boat when you pulled the plug on the ramp.

          I have the same hull as you, and I have my boat on an extreme trailer. To get the boat to drain the bow I need to put about 8” of wood under my trailer jack to raise it high enough.

          This is why I might sit a little longer then most on the ramp, as I what till the boat stops draining before I pull it to the lot for a wipe down.

          One more thing, I have noticed that when I do get water over the bow, that that night if I put my cover on and left the boat sit till next week it would smell really bad. What I did was install a vent in my cover. This will let the air flow and keep the mildew form growing. (With my cover it turned to boat into a green house)

          I also would place a small piece of foam under the back hatches to let air flow.

            Whitlock where do you put the foam? over your deck on the back that covers motor or in the deck doors to keep them from closing? I checked under the front seats it is still wet today had fan in there most of the afternoon to try to dry. I have been storing my boat at a marina(biulding a house and the house I rent has no where to put boat) Kinda sucks as I have to rely on them to put boat in and take out of water. thanks for your help

              Your speedo will not be leaking water as it is electronic.

                What I did was to get one of those water tube things (they come in many colors and are about 3” in di. you can get tem most any where)
                I cut it into 4 inch pieces.
                I would place it under the hatch to keep it open a little. (I would do this at the transom so that it would not be sitting on TOP of any vinyl)
                If the boat was real wet (or due to the fact that you have somebody else put it away) I would do the same to the bow seat cushions.
                This will let the air flow better (the only place that this will not let the air flow is the two big lockers in the front. (One is under the glove box and the other is in front of the driver. You have to get your boat really wet to get water in there.))

                Do not forget that some covers are almost airtight. This is why I had to add a vent to mine
                I placed the vent just before the windshield in the center. (One did the job for me)
                I also leave the plug out. (One to help the air flow and two, I had a friend that had his plug in with a dead batteries. after a few rains he had about 18” of water in his boat and about 3k in repairs.)

                  Water in front side compartments

                  I have a 2004 20V and I have a constant issue with water sitting in the small compartments under the side bow seats. Obviously it gets in there when I splash the front passengers going over the wake at slow speeds, but I am thinking sometimes it might get in there some other way. But the big problem is that there seems to be no drainage for those areas, and we end up bailing and then tieing up the seats to let the carpet dry out.
                  Anyone had a similar problem and better yet a solution? Tim
