    Crankshaft pulley removal?

Any of you guys ever removed a crankshaft pulley from a ~2000 era Merc 5.7 EFI engine? It's the pulley that bolts to the balancer with 3 9/16" bolts and then a 5/8" center bolt. Judging by the looks of the replacement pulleys I thought it could be unbolted and removed seperately from the balancer, but now that the bolts are removed and it isn't budging, I'm beginning to doubt that.

I was trying to replace it in an effort to replace all my pulleys, as they all have/had rust on them and within the last year they have started slicing through my belts.

    Thanks.

A bolt grip puller is what you need. Snap-on part # CJ2001PB. Your local NAPA,ADVANCE or Autozone should have one also.It consists of a yoke that has three or four bolt slots with a center screw. You thread bolts through it and turn the center screw to remove the pulley.
I do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

And it will remove just the pulley without loosening or damaging the harmonic balancer? Then do I have to line up the bolt holes perfectly to the balancer and beat it back on with a wood block?

WAIT!!!!! To remove the pulley, follow these instructions:
        1) Remove the 3 9/16" hex head bolts
        2) Remove the 5/8" hex head crankshaft bolt in the center
        3) Use a rubber mallet or block of wood and hammer and give it a few whacks at 90 degree intervals.

The paint is what holds those things in place after the bolts are removed.

To reinstall, reverse the above instructions with one exception: apply rtv sealant to the large crankshaft bolt and washer face where it makes contact with the pulley. This is to prevent engine oil from escaping through the threads and washer.
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

X2...... You don't need a puller unless you want to remove the balancer.

So just to be sure - The pulley is NOT pressed onto the crankshaft at all, so the new one should slip right onto it, correct?

Also is there an easy way to lock the crankshaft while I'm trying to tighten the bolts?
