    Rev 10 or Rev 8 - addition

I was wondering if an Exile Harpoon amp will support two pairs of Rev 8's or a pair of Rev 8's / pair of Rev 10's? I currently have a single pair of Rev 8's and was looking to upgrade, but did not want to add another amp to do so.

    Input appreciated.

The Exile Harpoon is about 350W RMS x 2 @ 2 ohm actual power. So driving 2 pair of 4 ohm speakers, it comes out to roughly 175W rms to each speaker. Thats respectable power for 2 pair of 8" HLCD's.

If it where I, I would not want to drive the 8" Rev-8 and 10" rev-10 wired in parallel on a stereo amp. This makes it tough to drive the larger speaker to its mid-bass potential, without over driving the smaller speaker. With this particular amp, 175W is WAY to light IMO for the large Rev-10. I would consider adding another amp for the Rev-10, like the HT-4 in 2 chnl mode for 300W rms to each, or Syn-4 for 400W to each. At that point, the larger speakers become the dominant pair and the contribution by the smaller pair is lessened.

Mike, I think I need about 1/3 of your stereo knowledge!!! Bigger Is better.. More is louder
      Right?

To some degree, you are right. The bigger the engine, the less "gas" we have to give it to maintain the same cruising speed. Bigger speakers can handle more power, but can also be more efficient to drive and will have more output.

Chp- below is what they say the amp is rated at. It says 500W at 2ohms, but maybe I am missing something. I think I understand what you are saying about running two different size speakers off one amp - do you think it would be enough to power 2 sets of Rev 8's sufficiently?

          1000W total power
          500W x 2 @ 2 ohms
          300W x 2 @ 4 ohms

Like Chp said, each speaker would be seeing 175 watts RMS from that amp which would get it done, but is pretty light for the Rev 8's IMO. Being around 250-300 watts each would be where I'd want to be on them buy then you'd have to add another amp

The Exile amps are not rated using CEA-2006 industry standards. Independent testing found the amp to produce 700W total RMS @ 2 Ohm. Thats 350 x 2, so 175W to each 4 ohm speaker when powering 2 pair. Its basically the same power to 4 speakers as the Wet Sounds Syn-2, which is what is recommend for 1 or 2 pair of Rev-8.

One thought, not exactly related to what you are saying...

Suppose you are bent on believing the specs you posted, then I would run the two REV 10's together, so that the REV 10 is not hogging power from the REV8. CHP has probably seen the insides, but I am pretty sure the Magnet is bigger on the REV10, so it will hog the power if you put the 10 and 8 together. Putting both 10's on the same channel is what I would do if I were constrained by the amp. Run it in mono.
                Be excellent to one another.

I wouldnt buy Rev 10's unless you were planning on giving them 300-400 watts RMS minimum. I would think it would b a waste unless you want the cosmetics of bigger speakers. Im definately not an expert but I sure do love the 400 watts on my Rev 10s

I really like the look of the Rev10's with the Rev8's. I'd be curious if you could really hear a dramatic difference vs 2pr of Rev10's.

Either way, you really shouldn't power them all with your Exile amp. They will play but you'll be very disappointed. My boat came from the factory with a pair of Rev10's powered by a Syn2. It was wired in stereo so the speakers were only getting 200W each. It really didn't sound all that good.

They woke up nicely when I installed the 2nd pair and powered them with 2 JL MHD750/1's. I think the magic starts to happen at around 300W.

You could just sell the Exile amp and buy 2 of my 750/1's in the classified section. Problem solved!
