    2000 23v alternator question.

I am fairly new to the boating world, me and my dad bought a 2000 23v the middle of this past summer. We are planning on doing some things to it this winter while it is down. We are wanting to do a surf ballast setup, tower speakers, subwofer, dual battery with isolator, and maybe some LED lights. I was just wondering if we should be worried about the alternator as im sure it is the factory one. Any input would be a huge help. We got it for a killer deal so we dont mind putting money in to it.

Most typical OEM alternators will keep pace with the draw a mild (1-3 moderate amps) stereo while the engine is running. It really comes down to how you intend to use the system. If you plan to drop anchor and play the system for hours a day, then make a short trip back to the dock or ramp, then even the most expensive alternator upgrade will not recharge the depleted house bank. I would check the alternator to see what amperage it is, and maybe consider an upgrade in the future. With its current age, adding to its present load will accelerate the wear, but it may not need to be done now. Depending on what size battery you choose for the house bank, the isolater used and wiring schematic, the scope of the stereo and how you intend to use the system, I would consider a shore charger.

Im pretty sure the factory alternator is 60 amp output. We will run the radio and ballast pumps some but we will also do quite a bit of riding too so the boat will be running probably 40% of the day.
