    LAKE SAN ANTONIO, CALIF.

I live in So. Cal, but brother lives closer to Central Coast (Lompoc). I have told him I would like to make a trek up to go boating with his family next year for a few days. Based on what I have heard, Lake San Antonio seems to be a nice lake for families. Anyone here boat there? If so, can someone provide the positives, negatives, and maybe alternatives close to Lompoc that may be better? Thanks in advance - D&P

I camp/boat at Lake San Antonio multiple times every summer. It is a great family lake. I would be happy to share the pluses/minus with you. Do you have specific questions, or are you just looking for general info?

General info. for the most part. Is it safe to tube? How strict are they with there boat inspections? Are the rentals they list nice? Does it get real crowded? etc. Thanks.

This past summer we went up to Nacimiento and had a great time. It's right next to San Antonio. It can get crowded in the afternoons and we did hit some wind issues, but the wind chop was pefect for throwing kids off the tube.

We got up 'vacation' early (7am - 8am) and wakeboarded on glass half the mornings we were there.

The inspector was VERY strict. I'd suggest making sure your boat is dry (inside and out) before you get there. Blow it out with a compressor if you need to.

It is very safe to tube. You can always find a place to tube. It typically has a wind bump early in the am.
The lake will glass off by about 9am. In my opinion the inspection is quite mild. Sometime you self inspect. If the ranger is there, They will check your bilge to see if its dry. Usually takes less than 5 minutes. I have never stayed in the rentals. The rentals are definitely in a nice spot. (Near souh shore ramp) We usually camp at north shore, and leave the boat in the water for the weekend. South shore camping is away from the lake. You will take your boat out of the water daily if you camp at south shore. It can get very hot, and there is very little shade, so bring your own shade. The wind comes up in the late afternoon/evenings. It is a great family lake. You can usually find nice water by the dam, and some nice day beaches on the south shore. Get there early. Even when it's a holiday, the boating crowd is not too bad. Let me know if you have any other questions.

All of the above is correct from what I remember. Some big weekends there are a lot of people that camp on the north east shore. It looks like a pretty nice place to camp if you have an RV or trailer.

We stayed in the rentals once. I'm not sure if they have been upgraded since we were there 10 years ago, but they were just Plain Jane trailers. Well I just looked at their website, and it definitely looks like they have been either replaced or remodeled, they look A LOT nicer than when I was there.

The only down side was I remember we couldn't leave our boat in the water over night...I can't remember why. The rentals are still a ways off the shore line, but had an amazing view of the water.

Great feedback everyone! Thanks to everyone who provided me with a clear picture of what to expect! I viewed the website as well, but feedback from TO's seems to be more trustworhy and accurate.
