    Cliff Diving

    Guys,
This happened on my home lake on Sunday. It is the second teenage death in 2 months from kids jumping into the water from either Cliffs or Boat Dock roofs, without life jackets on.

I was starting to let my 13 year old jump off of docks without his vests, but no more. I hope to teach as many of my kids friends that anytime jumping from height, they better wear a lifejacket, because you never know what is going to happen when you hit the water.

Thanks for sharing...this is a cold hard reality to the fun and pleasure we share on the water.

The incident location is actually about 300 yards from where the TIGE Brochure shots are taken.

Just one more reason I don't really mess around with cliff jumping.

very sad indeed. but i always wonder just what kind of jumping is being done... like gainers vs just jumping feet first. I see alot more then just "jumping" around here.

Lake Powell has some of the best cliff jumping anywhere, and you can usually find a spot with a gradual grade, so you can go as high as you dare. It is technically illegal, according to the park rangers, but I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket. There are deaths pretty regularly. I tell people that they need to wear a life vest. It may not save your life, but it makes the body recovery much cheaper. It is a lot of effort to find someone in 400 feet deep water.

Thanks for the reminder of the risk with such activities. Most people do not understand risk very well. If the odds are 1:10000 of dying, would you still do it? What if it is 1:1,000,000? It is hard to put a number on the risk, but the odds of dying cliff jumping are a whole lot higher than other activities, and it multiplies a dozenfold when you do it without a life vest.

It reminds me of the kid who died teaksurfing...The carbon monoxide made him pass out...the 40 minutes on the bottom of the lake probably is what killed him. He may have been rescued if he had a vest on. But then they sued successfully for millions.

Same fate happened to a 16 year old boy vacationing from Minnesota on our lake this year. Very sad.

All this is very sad but also reinforces the idea of wearing a propper PFD when particpating in water sports.

My kids and others get mad when I tell them to have one on even while swimming around the boat.

                          x2.

When swimming in deep water off the boat anyone who went in the water had to wear a ski vest including 2 of 4 dogs. The exception dogs were our labs. At a sandbar where the swimmer could stand vests where not required unless the swimmer was going to swim off into deeper water.

The finally found the young man's body at 9:21 on thursday night. 4 1/2 days in the water. At least they finally found him to help give his family some closure. RIP Jacob Logan #21.

FYI they found him @ 21:21 military time and his number on the football field was #21...
