I sell Meridian and they have been doing this forever. All of their speakers are active DSP speakers where the signal is kept digital via a cat5 cable all the way to the speaker which has the DSP processor, D/A converter and amplifier all built in.
How cool would it be to have powered tower speakers that run off of a single cat5 from a POE switch?2011 Tigé RZ4

I'm not sure BT is stable enough for these communications. I'm not sure of the bandwidth limitations of BT either. I've yet to hear anything that sounds particularly good. The new WS420 will have BT.
Shielded Cat5 or Cat6 would be awesome in many ways: easy to run and terminate, cheap, high bandwidth and low signal loss.
It's a pipe dream though. No one wants to invest money into that for audio at this level and cable manufacturers would have a cow!
