I just bought a new Montana 333db 5er but I have a short bed. I already have a b&w ball and would like to use the companion hitch. B&W doesn't recommend using a pin extender with the hitches. I also see a company call Colibert makes a slider that goes into the b&w. Any body use this type of hitch?

When you talk about the extender would you then convert your 5th wheel king pin to a gn? If so I would not recommend that. The 5th wheel hitches will have movement side to side front to back whereas the gn will not. I have heard of several trailers being destroyed because the trailer had to absorb the twisting instead of the hitch.
I have not used a slider but have friends that have. From what I recall they only use it when backing up.
Others don't have a slider and have a short bed and are really cautious. Unfortunately it only takes once.

They make king pin extender like the airborne sidewinder that give 10 inches in front of the original pin. I also dont plan on pulling this much. It will sit at the lake all summer and be put in storage in the winter. It will sit in one spot unit the water gets low and then it will go up and down the beach. I have also thought about what you said. They make a plate to ball adapter that extends 10 inches also. I also drive a chevy 3/4 ton so I dont know it that matters with the bed size.

I have a Chevy 2500 crew cab with a standard box and use the B &W Companion hitch without a problem to pull my fifth wheel. This hitch is awesome (IMHO) as it is really easy to remove and you do not lose the use of your truck bed from the rails in a typical hitch. It does have a lower rating then most fifth wheel hitches, I think 18,500 lbs, but that is still more than what my truck is rated so that doesn't really matter in my case. From what I have read, people with sliders very rarely, if at all, have to use them. I have also heard manufacturers do not recommend using a GN adapter to pull fifth wheels for reasons skippabcool stated. Hope this helps!

They are not cheap, but slider hitches work very well for short beds and dont affect your hitch on your 5th wheel either. This company makes the B&W adapter to go with their slider hitch.

I also have a short bed 3/4 ton and use the B&W companion hitch. I have pushed the weight ratings and pulled half way across the country with no issues with it. I think the design and concept is fantastic, as brichardson said, the best part being you can completely remove the whole thing in a matter of minutes.

I do not have firsthand experience, however there is a guy on another forum that I visit that has slider hitch for this same reason (short bed), supposedly it automatically slides out when slowing down or sharp turns, can't remember details but he loves it and says it always works great.Friends don't let friends POWERTURN
