Why Carpet?

Looking at the thread on the Wet Sounds Z3 build, I saw all the carpet going in, and it made me think of a question I've had for a while.

Why is carpet the only option for lining the storage areas? It has big drawbacks for places that are inherently wet and usually enclosed -- it collects the water/moisture, gets moldy, etc. How about some sort of rubber material that's tough but soft enough to protect the contents? Or maybe something like the Poseidon flooring (but thinner)? Even something like sea deck may work.

I'm assuming a big compoent is the cost (and probably ease of installation), which I understand, but how about about offering something else as an upgrade? Do any of the other manufacturers use something else?

I agree - give us another option. I stripped out the carpet in my bow section and added the drains and bedliner, and it was a severe pain to get all the carpet and glue out.

I have always wondered the same thing. My Ranger bass boat was finishes with gelcoat in these areas. You have some good examples an ideas. Maybe Tige' should consider options and it may help sell more boats over others just because. I hate to have to open up all my stoage areas when they get wet.

The new G23 and G25 have Seadek Faux Teak.

I agree. The carpet is a bit of a pain. I'd be ok with the sides of the hull being carpet but I really wish there was another option for the flooring.

I agree... I struggle with keeping the carpet dry, especially under the front bow ballast bag. Thinking about removing some carpet to alleviate the problem.

I like the bedliner I had sprayed in my trunk mod. I can just hose it out and never worry about wet carpet. I'm thinking of having it done in the front lockers as well.

I agree that carpet in the lockers is antiquated.

Better than Malibu and Supra that cover all of the surfaces in carpet!

Good Point! Probably cheaper than applying a nice smooth gelcoat finish or sea-dek. Malibu's carpet on all of the interior surfaces reminds me of houses that have carpet in the bathroom. Some see it as luxurious, others see it as a mold and mildew trap.

My Sis's 2010 VLX are smooth walled rear compartments on the engine side and floor.

I would like to see all the carpet go away, but the price will go up because like Bspot says, it is cheaper to cover flaws then to finish them

My buddy's new MXZ is smooth on the inside but still carpeted in the compartments.

It's a lot of work to smooth out the fiberglass and not very healthy either. If Tige started doing smooth finished compartments and lockers with Seadek or the like, it would probably be a new gel coated floor that would be glassed to the floor. That seems like it would be a lot less labor and you'd get consistent results every time.

The VLX had black panels lining the compartments on the floor and engine side,the Hull side was carpeted I think they were plastic but not positive about it.

Why not spray it with rhino liner or a rubberized spray type material? I can't imagine the price difference would be huge by the time you eliminate extra labor
