Assume you have it flush with boat when going to/from surf zone...then deploy the flap "out" when you are ready to surf?
What type of wrench do you use to spin those bolts, or can they be spun by hand to cinch it into place?

We don't surf enough or I would build one. We spent 3 days on the water this weekend and I only surfed for about 10min but I was finally able to get a little air!

Interesting. Your wave looks like the Z3 alot. There's that huge flat spot on the top that's not as apparent on my wave (see pics). I noticed this on the Z3 that I was on last week because I thought it would be fun to see if I could ride on the top there and if there would be push or not. Here's a pic of my RZ2 wave in not so great conditions from this weekend.

The list and combo of the trim tab will not make the wave bigger, it wil probably change the shape but what drives the size of the wave is the displacement of water by the hull. What's happening with the surfgate is the same as with a listed boat, your driving your boat in a slip. The boat is wanting to turn in a circle and you are correcting that circle by driving straight. I noticed this weekend how much I had to counter steer my boat when it's weighted and listing. The surf tab is trying to "push" the back end of the boat out of alignment and your having to compensate with rudder to keep the boat pointed straight. The coutnter steer is what cleans up the wave on one side, making it smooth and rideable. Next time you guys are out, and especially if you have a new steering cable, you'll be able to feel the pull of a listed boat to turn in the direction of the list. I suspect there is a similar feeling on the steering wheel of the surf gate boats, and just that little bit of coutnersteer to keep the boat tracking will keep the boat straight and the wave nice and smooth.
I think it's a super smart system, I'm sure all the other boat companies are wishing they had thought about it, and I bet they are trying to figure out other ways to have the same effect. One thing I can think of is multiple rudders on the bottom corners of the boat and possibly a steerable tracking fin to put the boat into a side slip as well. I'm sure we'll see more ways to skin this cat in the next few years.2009 RZ2, PCM 343, MLA Surf Ballast, Premium Sound.
