B]I guess we will learn to Surf.[/B]

Well, a coulpe weeks ago I had a wakeboading accident and broke my face (literally - nose, cheek bone, small jaw bone, stitches - spent two nights in the hospital). So, looks like we are gonna learn to surf. LOL.

My question is: We have a 2000 22i and I am wondering what its gonna take to set it up to surf? Or, is this model just not going to be able to throw a big enough wake?

Thanks in advance - I've been on the forum for a while just never posted anything - but I would appreciate any information anyone has.

I have a 21i, and I can get a pretty good wake, so I would think that you would be able to do so as well. Sorry to hear about the accident.

Look up the surf threads and you should find some good information about how to weight your boat.

mind if i ask how this happened... wife just had one broke her tailbone.. but in her case that is why you look at where your at\going and not the boat!

Yikes. Hope you heal quick. My daughter came close to that 3 weeks ago, for her it only ended up a bloody nose, cut mouth (mainly from the braces), and a dislocated jaw.

Everyone that I have gotten to surf with me gets hooked immediately.

I would think it cheaper to try weight than a new boat. Try it first with the people you have to see if you can get a decent wave. Bags of sand, stone, etc for trial can be had for less than 3$ a pop at Home Depot and likely reused...

            Hope you heal quickly!

Thanks guys, I'm doing pretty well already...ready to go the lake again.

I'll try to keep it short....same ol'story - last run of the day.....but I got caught up in the rope and as the boat pulled, the handle "slig-shot" through my face. It was pretty ugly, blood every where, my nose on the side of my face (lol), kids were crying, wife histerical. Lake Patrol actually tried to bring in the helicopter to air lift me out - pretty good way from any major city - but we talked them out of that.

As you said gcome, it wasn't the boats fault...just an accident (or bad luck). Its pretty funny though, everyone asks "so, you gonna sell the boat now?"

As to the surfing, we are pretty excited about trying. We have been watching everybody and now we have a pretty good reason - to keep the wife happy!!lol.
We have had a little bit of weight in the boat and I just really didin't think the wave was gonna be good enough to surf - comparing by looking at others that I see surfing, but I will dang sure give it a try.
But what kind of weight to add are we talking with a 22i - 1000 lbs?

I've been reading everything I can find.....I'm getting ready to load it down and try it out....

Thanks D&P - I remember reading that thread a while back. That is some serious mods - I would love to do something like that.

NickyPoo, nice job - Can you tell me roughly what kind of weight you are adding to surf?

Well, now that I know the boat can do it...I gotta learn to surf...

sell the boat..hahaah now that is funny. if that was the case can you imagine how many peeps would be walking due to auto accidents... lol

get better! that sounds like some painful stuff.

Right now my conservative number is 450# on each side. I think it holds a little more than that. The issue at the moment is list, too much list. These hulls "suck air". It feels like cavitation or tranny slip but, its the hull trapping air and getting to the prop. With zero V at the back and huge negative chines, the air can't escape out the side. If you think about about the typical V-drive, it has a V-hull all the way back and small chines, if any. To get that V to a flat running surface takes an immense about of weight. I've been a few boats with a lot of weight (1500+) and they still don't do that. If I load up both sides, it won't slip at all. So with twice the weight but only a slight list, it runs just fine. With half the weight but twice the list, it will slip constantly. It's not a deal killer though. The flat transom has me thinking that I can get both sides surfable. I've tried this the last two times out but, mother nature has been against me with the wind. It looks like its there and it certainly would be the ultimate in surf wakes. I think I need a mudflap too.

My suggestion to you would be to get as much ballast as you can in the trunk and get all your people on one side. 10.1 to 10.6 on a gps speedo, taps between 8-4. The next thing you want (need) is a fast board. Don't waste your money on some wakeboard company popout. By a real board. I would recommend the Flyboy or perhaps a Lakewakes. I would recommend mine but, they are out of production. Speed is your friend and crappy boards ain't got it.

I would also suggest a good prop. What are you running now?

                            Thanks GCOMBE, I appreciate it.

NickyPoo - Great information. Thats exactly what I was needing to hear. Personally anything under 1000 lbs doesn't bother me...another over starts scaring me alittle though.

My prop is a 51513x12Y. I do get quite a bit of slip, especially if I don't have any weight up front(obviously). I was actually worried for a while that it was the tranny, but finally ruled that out due to hull design as you mentioned. Do you think a different prop would help much compared to the one I'm running?

Yeah, I figured the board would be a huge factor. I've been doing a little research as to size....what would you suggest...I'm about 6'2", 185?

Thanks again for the help and information.
