Boat won't crank at times - Throttle issue?

Hey guys, I have been noticing more and more some issues with what appears to be my throttle. As you all know when surfing and wakeboarding you are constantly shutting off the boat for a bit then starting back up. Last night this issue started happening much more frequently. I would shut off the boat to switch riders and when going to turn the key to fire it back up I would get nothing. I literally have to move the throttle lever into gear and back out in order to get it to crank and fire up.

The boat is a '99 21v Riders Edition that was used 250 hours over the life of the boat, so it has seen an extreme bounce in usage this season as I have around 90 hours racked up thus far. It seems like with this much use something has loosened up with the throttle a bit maybe?

Any thoughts or items to check/tighten up?

Im not familure with where its located on the 21V but sounds like you could have a neutral safty switch going bad on you.

I agree it sounds like a neutral safety switch.

Neutral Safety switch. You should be able to push the throttle just to the point of putting it in gear and it should fire. It could be you just need to adjust the cable on the drive unit.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

So this neutral safety switch - is it a part that can be replaced/adjusted? Is it located on the throttle itself or back by the motor?

The neutral safety switch should be on the transmission, you will see two wires attached to it on the top of the trans.

I thought this issue had went away until last night - I was almost to the point of calling for a tow back to the house. So this neutral safety switch is actually on the transmission - can that be easily accessed? I am thinking of calling the local shop to come out and take a look at it but would rather exhaust my resources before paying someone to fix it. If anyone has any more in depth instructions on how to access and adjust this part I would really appreciate it!!!

I thought I remembered a similar thread recently. Here it is: http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/show...+safety+switch
There is a pretty good description of where to find it, and a picture of it.

I had this issue with my new 2011 RZR ... they said the neutral switch behind the throttle was offset just a little. So it would start up right off the trailer but once I killed it and tried to restart it, it wouldn't start unless I took the throttle and put it in reverse, then back to neutral. It was a quick easy fix ... they did it.

                    Good luck!

Thanks for looking that tread up, it looks to be about what I am dealing with. So when you say the transmission, do you mean the v-drive unit that is right in front of my motor? Sorry for the lack of knowledge, this is my first inboard

Mine seems to be almost this exact problem. I can play around the throttle when it won't start - shift it forward, reverse, etc. and eventually it will start. Now i'm wondering if this switch in my shifter could be the problem?

No switch in/on shifter. There is only one switch and its located on trans. Now there are adjustments on the cable at the shifter and at the trans. You could have worn cable ends causing it to be out of adjustment or a bad switch. By the sound of it getting harder and harder to get it to start I would guess the switch is going bad. Its cheap and easy so I would start there. Its a common problem and with the age of you boat it wouldnt hurt have a new one. If you wanted to go all in you will have to take the shifter out and inspect the little brass ends that are on the cable to see if they are worn. The worn ends are more common on boats that are little older and/or have a lot of hours on them. How many hours does your boat have?

Here is a pic of the cable ends at the shifter it threads onto the cable end and then the smaller shank part goes through the shift lever and is held in by a small cotter pin. The small shank will wear over time and cause it to get out of adjustment. Hope this helps.
Note: This pic/link is just for info..I am not saying this is the part # for your boat.

I looked up my shifter online, and it appears that there is some sort of switch on the shifter unit itself. Take a peek at the manual and let me know your thoughts...

As far as the hours on the boat, I purchased it this spring with 260 hours on it, and I have put around 110 so far this season so we are sitting right around 370. I am nervous some things are going to start going wrong with as little use as it had the past years, to getting jumped up and used to all hell this season...
