Fuel coming out around the gas cap

This just started happening in the last few weeks. I'll trailer the boat to the lake and when we get there, there is a streak of fuel spilled along the side, directly under the gas cap. The cap is on tight and tank is probably around half full. This is on a 98 22i. Any ideas?

Is the seal on the cap itself still in good shape. That rubber can harden and crack. Then it breaks and falls off which allows it to leak. This can also allow water into your fuel.

Was the cap cross threaded maybe?

There is no vent near the cap. I checked the rubber seal and it seems to be in good shape, still rubbery with no visible cracks in it. After the 1st time it happened, I made sure to be extra careful when tightening the cap down and it happened again.

I did notice a hole in the center of the cap that goes through and comes out in the threads (so it's past the rubber seal). Seems like the perfect spot for gas to get through, but I'm assuming thats a deliberate design as a vent or something. Any other thoughts?

I would check the vent hose all the way to the hull , make sure there are no drupes in the line or it will act like a sink trap and trap liquid and not vent expansion preasure, also blow the vent out , we have lots of boats that come in and have spiders build nest in the vent.

How much gas is leaking out? I don't think it would take very much to leave a noticeable streak, so could it be fuel that was sitting inside the rim of the cap. I know that I have to pay close attention when fueling because I will sometimes get a little splash back before the auto shut off on the pump kicks in. A few times I have let someone else fuel the boat and have seen some pretty significant fuel spillage. (Hey, if they are willing to pay for gas, they can make a little mess and it's fine with me.)

After something like that, I'll try to wipe up with paper towels, but I always end up with a little more leaking out when we get to the next stop and wipe up again.

I have the same problem with my 99 pre. I have even replaced the rubber seal. I can't surf off that side because i get water in the gas tank. Not sure what's going on.

dealer fixed it on my 05 22v

the breather hose was angled in a way that was causing the valve not to function properly (ie not closing). so changing the angle fixed it.
