to promote the contraption Malibu in conjunction with Universal Pictures is coming out with a movie...starring Jean Claude VanDamm and Scarlet Johanssen. Of course it's called 'Surf Gate'and the hero (JCV') goes back in time to Malibu (where else?) to stop an evil genius bent on destroying the inventor of TIGE Boats. Along the way he has to save a hot girl (SJ')from Evil's lair'..In the process of foiling the bad guy they both learn to surf and eventually fall in love

    Was up Duff?

I still don't get the whole 45 minute thing. We can completely change sides with my manual fill, only 1 pump, system in way less than that! I guess I'll keep posted.

From the looks of the explanation on Wakeworld it's described as follows.Their is basically a trim tab on the side of the transom that is vertically mounted. It deploys out at a slight angle approximately 15 to 20 degrees. The tab that deploys is opposite the surf side.It redirects the flow of water back to the wave which cleans up the opposite side. The boat doesn't list or crab. The real magic is even though this tab pokes out at 15 to 20 degrees it doesn't create any drag.Your kids can hang on it and it will support them too.You load your boat evenly with 1200 lbs and don't have to drain your ballast when docking. It's a true miracle.
I do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

Iwndr when Wickedcummins will start some R&D on a version without actuators? Should be able to make a tab that you can hook to the platform brackets somehow that would always be "engaged" so to speak.

I got some things what should make a clean sick looking wave.. Just need some down time with the boat to build em.. And some time on the CNC

I keep whatching the video over, and over. I keep seeing water splashing on the face of the wave. That is where im always looking. That boat has got to suck some fuel. Ballast, wedge, and surf gate! Thats a lot of drag!

If its making a wave it's displacing water. Additional ballast increases the displacement of the boat which makes a bigger wave which is drag, a wedge pulling the boat down into the water to simulate a boat full of water is creating just as much drag, maybe just a tiny bit more but I imagine the difference is not measurable. And the surfgate system looks like it pushes the boat into a slip or skid to get the wave shape and that would be just as much drag as a heavily weighted and listed boat. I think it's a neat system and I would love to see one in person and weight it down with more than just the factory weight.

Nice analysis re slip/skid. That makes a lot of sense.

But I think that would create more drag because of reduced efficiency of the hull. In other words, a well designed efficient hull with lots of weight for displacement will take less energy to move through the water than a poorly designed inefficient hull with the same displacement. Plus, with a surfgate deployed, the boat would feel like a turning brake is engaged -- you would either always be in a shallow turn or burn more energy to (inefficiently) keep the boat going straight.

innovative.. I will say that much. will be interested to see the longevity of it. just with that much drag and the abuse it will see?

I own a 2012 Malibu MXZ and wake surfing is something we rarely do; it was not even a factor when choosing a wakeboard boat. Surf Gate does have my interest and I will learn more before ordering a 2013, but in the mean time all I can go on is what others are reporting. Are the observations from ”Hardcore” surfers looking for a competition size wave? No, but there are enough people who have tested the system to tell me it’s effective and the boat does not list, crab or slip” with the gates deployed. From looking at the pictures you can see the gates are mounted further in on the transom, so when deployed they are not outside the running surface of the hull. Again, I’ve not seen it or driven it, but I’m guessing when one is deployed the other is straight to increase tracking. It’s very easy for many to speculate how it works or doesn't, including me. I still come across Tige owners who don’t understand how TAPS works and other non-Tige owners think it’s only a trim plate on a conventional hull.

I’m sure those following the release on other sites have seen these pictures, but I will share them anyway.

I love to see innovative new attempts to further the convenience and performance of the sport. For sure the jury's still out whether Malibu's design will work or not, but I'll be watching over the next few months (years) with interest to see if it pans out.

I surf the dark side and the wife surfs regular, so a chance to make a changeover in seconds would mean me not having to ride switch all the time. Very attractive.

Lucky for me given the tax bracket I'm in I'll have ample opportunity to let the designs prove out for all the new Tige's, Malibu's, etc before I have to worry about making a purchase decision

I also can't wait till Ragboy gets a look at one of these and gives us a report because he is not only knowledgeable but fair no matter the brand.
