    Changing oil

When I was kicking it at the marina sunday, this guy says to use Mobile 1 synthetic oil. Heaviest weight. I always use synthetic but its the merc stuff. Will the Mobile 1 from checkers be just fine? By the way its 350 mag motor

Yea I just found a couple of quarts of the merc stuff. It seems to be a heaver weight than the mobile 1. Im just going to stick with that.

Similar to the fuel question this has many different responses. I asked the local dealer, Tige directly, and looked to see what the engine manufacture recommended, all different.

It depends on how you use the boat I think. If your out every day and don't winterize and use it during the winter than synthetic might be good for you. I was told by some good mechanics here that if the boat sits for a while or you winterize you should use regular Dino oil. The reason is that synthetic is very good about flowing fast at startup so it minimizes the cranking wear on engines as the oil pump is just starting to work. The downside is that synthetic flows so well that if the engine sits for a while, the synthetic stuff runs down to the pan and doesn't leave as thick a coating on the top end of the engine, so there might be some metal exposed that may start a little oxidation. Whereas Dino oil leaves a thick enough film that the engine is better protected from periods of storage or less use.

That's what I was told and it makes sense to me so I use Shell Rotella-T6? I use mobile 1 in my cars though, and I change the oil and filter every 6,000 miles wih mobile 1.

#1 ingredient in conventional oil = Dinosaur

If you consider microscopic organisms to be dinosaurs, than yes the #1 ingredient is Dinosaur. It's definitely not Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Im not a Synthetic guy because I do not see the cost diff adding up to the advertised advantages. Dom with Forts Inboard in FL has a great point. In his experience, syn will eventually drip off the moving parts in toys like boats and collector cars that sit for periods of time, rather then daily drivers. This leads to dry/metal-to-metal friction upon initial start. Not good.

Im more about using a quality brand and the proper weight for your application and use. Although the weight may not be exactly what the engine manf. rec's. If your climate is hot and you only boat in the warm months, then go with a single vis if that's what the manf. rec's. For us, we will board year round, so firing up when its 50* out is not unheard of. So for us, I use a multi-vis so I get the cold pumpability.

I only paid limited attention in 10th grade science class. Something about energy not being destroyed so everything used to be a dinosaur. I also remember girls with tight pants, but not sure how that's related.

I'm with TigeTrojan on this one, both the tight pants and oil comes from dinosaurs
