Still having troubles...

Sorry for the long post, trying to get things figured out.

Seeing if there are any other ideas on what could be happening with our boat. I will probably be taking it to a shop but wanted to make sure there isn't something I can try myself.

Today we were out and the boat just started to cut in/out and just shut off again. It happened 4 times and would take a few minutes of sitting for it to start up again. This time we were not sitting for any period of time and on the last few, There was a little smoke from the exhast coming out. Not a lot but just a little. There was a sound coming from where the alternator is after the engine shut off, like a hissing or fan/belt running for a few seconds. But again, it would just start up after a few trys. I checked the Volt meter and it was around 14 on both batteries. I tried just using one battery and when it happened I switched to the 2nd one and same thing, no changes it did it on both.

It happend 3 times within 20 mins and then it didn't happen again for 30 or so minutes while I was surfing.

Could I have filled up with some bad gas, would this have anything to do with batteries? Thoughts would be great, trip planned in a 3 weeks.

2006 24V, I don't know if anyone has changed the batteries since new, Only has 180 hours and this seems to be worse then on the 4th since we have been out.

Or could this have anything to do with it not being winterized correctly?(The place I took it to didn't know a whole lot about inboard boats but they said it all went well) But it ran well the get go, and there were a few times in May as well. Or possibly a fuel pump issue.

When you are trying to start it is anything happening? Is it trying to turn over, can you hear the starter working? Or is there nothing going on? If it's trying to turn over but not catching then you have to look at 2 issues, is the engine getting gas and/or is it getting spark. There are far better mechanics on here better than me but if you get it running and it starts sputtering and shuts down then I would lean toward a fuel issue. You might have contamination in the gas that is blocking the fuel pickup or the contamination might be in the fuel line. I would try draining the gas in the tank and changing the fuel filter first. They are relatively easy things you can do to help yourself or mechanic narrow down the trouble. The next thing would be to pull the fuel line going into the fuel rail to see if the pumps are supplying fuel. Of course you need to have a bucket or empty fuel tank for the fuel to go into, and you need to check this when the boat is having starting issues.

One other thing that happened to a boat a little while ago is they had a blockage of the fuel vent. This caused a vacuum to form in the gas tank after the engine ran for a while which "vapor locked" the engine, starved it of fuel. When they opened up the gas filler cap, it released the vacuum and they were able to start and run the boat again, until it vapor locked again.

Hope this gives you something to tinker with until you get more symptoms or boatwakes or dom forte chime in.

Ya, could be a few issues. My first guess would be fuel system: bad gas, water in the gas, bad pump, bad filter, something like that. If you are able to keep starting up again and again, I don't think it is a battery issue.
