When we went out today the boat started fine. cruised out to the middle of the lake filled the fat sacs and started surfin. 5 minutes into it I noticed the temp was overheating. I stopped then the buzzer went off. I turned off the boat waited a minute then tried again. So I emptied the fat sacs got towed in and took it home. I was thinking just the impeller. So I replaced it with a spare. The one I took out was stripped aroung the center so it wasnt turning. I thought it was fixed. Then I hooked up fake a lake and started the boat. The belt was not turning. I tried to get it tighter but could not get it to turn when the motor was on. So I put a another one that I had in my garage. The main shaft off the motor was turing but the belt was not. So the impeller and alternator and everything else is not turning. Any advice would be great. Thanks, Happy 4th

Impeller serpentine belt problems

Take the belt back off and try turning all the pulleys by hand and find out wich one is locked up. Most of the time on the Mercs. its the raw water pump. But since you just had it apart thats kind of odd. Did you put any type of lube on the impeller? Something is locked up thats why the belt is not turning you just need to check all the pulleys and figure out wich one.

Just a thought.....when you installed the new impeller, did you rotate the veins so they where turned the right direction? I know in the older Mercs, if they impeller is flipped, the belt will slip instead of rotating the pulley and flipping it back the right direction.
Try lubing the impeller and housing with some dish soap.
Double check your belt routing.

The big one in the middle??? There are 2 larger pulleys on the center line. The crankshaft is in the middle way down low...and you will not be able to turn that by hand. The other larger pulley on the center line that is pretty much right in the middle is the circulating water pump. It has a large smoothe pulley (no groves) the crank pulley has groves. This pulley should turn very easy pretty much no resistance at all. Make sense? Also when you checked the raw water pump did you make sure it turned clockwise. Yes it will turn counter clockwise by hand but thats the wrong way when the motor is running. So make sure you turning it the right way. (The way the motor would be turning it).

Haha, I like your new solution. Buying a new boat will totally fix it! My raw water pump went out last year, but it didn't seize.
So you are saying that the crankshaft pulley turns when you run the engine, but the belt doesn't move, right?
Is the belt facing the right direction? Some belts have grooves on one side and are smooth on the other. Make sure that the grooves on the belt are facing the pulleys that also have grooves, and the smooth side of the belt is up against the smooth pulleys. Like kko said, the crankshaft will have grooves.
If you can't get them all to line up correctly, then you probably have the wrong path.
Or the wrong boat

My serpentine belt will do this occasionally. If the impeller fins are reversed, which will happen sometimes when you turn off the engine, or if you put a new impeller in. Try revving the engine up and this will usually flip the fins on the impeller the right direction. I used to pull the water pump and reverse them by hand, but the great Nick Weinaker told me that this used to happen on some of his Tige's and to just rev the engine.

Especially when your next to some guys crappy bayliner that is running smooth and your beautiful wake boat sounds like crap.

That is the Tigeguy family way of doing things. My 80 year old dad did that many times and still has credit card debt out the yingyang. He should be living a reasonably comfortable retirement, but is spending so much on his debt, that he is scraping pennies still. But if you have the money to upgrade, then by all means, upgrade. But don't buy a $75,000 boat to fix a $750 (or much less) problem. Since I am dealing with my dad wanting to buy stuff he can't afford lately, it is on my mind.Be excellent to one another.
