    22ve vs VLX comparison

We did a demo ride on a 22ve and a 21.5 Malibu VLX on Saturday. Having them within an hour or two made for a nice comparison.

We came away with a very simple description of the comparison. We felt like it was basically an European Sports Car vs an American Muscle Car. We felt like the Tige won in terms of driving and the Malibu won in terms of the boat itself - options, comfort, etc. Both boats were equipped with their 340 hp option.

Tige - We thought the boat handled better, my wife especially. It seemed more responsive and got out of the whole quicker. Visibility in the boat is better. Nose stays down better and the driver sits a little higher. Also liked the dash a little better. The boat was noticeably quiter than the Malibu. When driving it felt like the steering was much tighter. Not sure if it is design or the wake but the Tige seemed to handle the chop better. Two of the detractors for me is the tower and the seats. The tower is much more complicated to lower. I have to lower it to get in and out of the slip and low bridge crossing an area we go. I will have to move the tower at least once but maybe as much as 3-4 times each day. And the seats, relative to the Malibu I thought they were too narrow. The boat is 4"s wider and 6 inches longer but the seats have less room. If the seats were a little wider and the tower had a quicker release it would be a slam dunk. We didn't get behind the boats but I thought the ski wake looked better on the Tige, a little softer to get a across. The malibu looked to have more potential on the wakeboard side. But the relative differences will be meaningless to me. I am coming from an 18' I/O and recreational at best so nothing but upside for me.

Malibu - The boat handled a little sloppy, just not the sharp crisp turning of the Tige. I know my objects not going to be running a grand prix but still felt loose. The boat is loud relative to the Tige. Not unbearable but noticable in a back to back test. Driven on seperate days I probably wouldn't have noticed it. The driver's seat sits too low especially for my wife. We like being up above the windshield and with the bolster up I am fine but my wife was straining to look over the edge. Also the bow's a little higher and took little longer to get down. In relative terms, it was a little slower getting out of the blocks. Boat is a little rougher riding. As for the boat, we found it to be much more comfortable. If we had to choose a boat for just riding all day the Malibu wins hands down. The tower was easier to handle. While it looks a little star trekish it has grown on me. This is a small thing but I like the pop-up ski pylon. Probably some debate on its durability but I liked being able to get it out of the way. I was really surprised at how much roomier the malibu felt given it is a smaller boat.

Like I said upgrading from small I/O so both of these are great alternatives and the differences seem very small. We also compared the MC - too pricey in the same price - and CC - didn't like the feel of it, almost uncomfortable but it came down to these two for use. We will be using it for skiing, boarding, tubing and entertaining so performance isn't the only criteria to judge it on.

In our judgement Tige wins on performance/driving issues and Malibu wins on the boat design/features/comfort. They all have their differences in manufacturing methods but I didn't notice any real differences in quality. It's down to a gut feel now, nothing really to seperate the two boats.

The interesting thing you said is "If we had to choose a boat for just riding all day the Malibu wins hands down." Seems kind of contradictory since the Tige handles the chop better, doesn't make as much noise, and the driving/handling is better. I would say the Tige is the boat for you based on that statement. Plush fit and finish are worthless when you are getting bounced around and I wouldn't consider Tige's fit and finish sub-par. I do agree with you that Malibu's fit and finish is nicer and I would add that the wakeboarding wake is probably better when outfitted with the wedge. However, apples to apples comparison would have to go to the Tige. Here's why I think: 1) construction of the things that really matter, that make the boat last a long time, are better on the Tige IMO (this explains the handling, less noise, handles chop better). 2) You can add a ballast system for around the same cost of the wedge and make the boarding wake very comparable to the Malibu. 3) Tige surf wake is better IMO. 4) Wake is more adjustable with TAPS. You can make it less intimidating for kids or beginners. You can adjust the ride through different conditions for a smoother ride. The ski wake is pretty good (not sure on the ski wake for the Malibu so no comment). 5) Based on my experience, Tige stands behind thier boats and works hard to make people happy (within reason).

I will say that I currently own a 2004 22V Riders Edition and have really enjoyed that boat. It is on consignment and I'm moving over to CC because I really like the cross-over capablilities of one of thier models. That said, I can truely say that you will not go wrong with the Tige. You can always get an after-market tower if you don't like Tige's tower.

Good Luck to a very exciting boat shopping experience.

Ahhh...but jthere is much to seperate them...

Denbow...thanks for the great report on your head to head test drive. That's a great way to do things. My wife and I did the same thing.

We ended up with the 24Ve versus the Malibu. There are a multitude of reasons why and many of the creature comfort issues are things that came into the decission for us as well. One of the major issues that took us to the Tige was the overall construction and solid feel of the boat. The Tige is significantly more beefy in the hull and when you sit in the boat, you are deeper and safer feeling than in the Bu. You are right...they are both great boats in their own respects.

You might want to go back and check the 2006 Tige's thread back several pages from the current location. There is some good discussion on the plus and minus sides to both boats. There is also a good thread called the 24Ve that we participated in quite a lot and posted our report on the head to head run we took.

When you start to boil away some of the bling, I think you will find that you are getting a higher quality boat that will last longer with less wear and tear in the Tige. We are very happy so far with our new purchase and as you are finding...this is a big purchase. You need to be really happy with the boat.

The speed set on the Tige works great. A thought on the tower, check out the phatte budde tower as an option if your dealer offers it. I didn't see what part of the country you are in so don't know if they are available where you are. If you take a look in the galleries you can see our tower set up. For ours, it's just two handles to undo and the tower comes down. There are still two support pieces sticking up that aren't much taller than the windshield if at all... You can actually see some better pictures of it in the Does Wrangler Have a Tige? thread...

Best of luck to you in your purchase...

good post denbow, let us know what you decide on. I know a lot of new users will come on here with that same question once boat shows finish up and the spring gets closer.

Its the diff between an Escalade and a Denali.

          Both great.

          But different.

I did the exact same thing two years ago. We spent 1-2 hours in a 22V and the next 1-2 hours in a VLX. I liked the Malibu interior a little more and my family liked the Tige more. Both boat's interiors have changed some since then. The VLX was and is a nice boat, but the Tige is more solid and doesn't shake your teeth lose in rough water. In our test the Tige got the edge and the dealer factor and experience made the choice easy.

There is a significant amount of personal preference in the decision. Since the tower issue is important to you, I would really look hard at tower options, and then make a decision.

Wrangler - On your tower. How many bolts to unscrew to lower it? Which way does it fold? And I couldn't tell where the rope towed from?

Open to other tower options. Looking for ease of lowering since it will be done very frequently. But also quality and looks are important.

I liked the straight support on the Tige tower better than jagged one but it has to be totally removed to lower the tower. This results in having to remove 6 bolts. The jagged one is only 4 but I don't know if I like it.

The one other thing holding me back is the size of my boat slip. 108" at the entrace. That gives me 3" of play on each side, that is getting a little tight. I will have to have some welding done to move out my pulleys and probably extend the cradle out. Or maybe extending the cradle would be all I would have to do.

Anybody have the cockpit table? Thoughts. This comes from the entertainment use of the boat. Sunset rides are in high demand, make a nice feature for the fireworks shows and other events that take place.

Help bring me back to the Tige side. I am split down the middle.

                denbow,

If you will email me at tbarrett@tige.com I would like to send you the performance numbers that were compiled by WaterSki Mag. These results show that the other competitors are using 6.0s 6.2s and 8.1 engines ranging from 375 hp to 450 hp to try and achieve the performance numbers Tige is getting with the 5.7 340 hp. The bottom line is you will have to pay more money for the larger engine at the time of purchase and continually pay for more fuel for the life of ownership with any of our competitors boats. In a purchase like this perhaps fuel usage is not THE final deal maker but the additional cost will certainly build to a substantial number. Something to consider.
I will see if I can bring that file onto this forum.

The geniuses at Tige extended the 24ve windshield so that most aftermarket towers will not fit on a ve model, because the mounts would have to be so far apart. I am sure that someone has a tower that will fit, your dealer should help. This is a situation where you will find out if your Tige dealer is going to be there to support you. It is easy to order the boat without the tower and put another one on.

Dealer support should be an important part of your decision when you are on the fence like this.

Another option is to order the 22V (not Ve) and there are oodles of aftermarket towers that would fit, and be very easy to fold. The boat is mostly the same.

If you plan on sitting in the boat all day without going anywhere, you may find the Malibu more comfy, but if you are driving, the Tige will be a much better ride.

The bow rise in the Malibu is because of the hull shape and at slower speeds you will never be able to see without using the seat riser or standing up.
                  Be excellent to one another.

Wow~ this is a great thread. And it will only get better. There are a few key differences that i think would help me make my decision that havnt been mentioned yet. The walk-thru transom really makes the 22ve a very user-friendly boat. Easy to get in, no stepping on upholstery, no sliding boards across upholstery, etc. I think many people overlook this feature, and then once they use it they cannot imagine having a boat without a walk-thru transom. Another nice new feature of the Ve series is the activity center, aka the transom. Being able to sit comfortably and put on your gear is a huge bonus. There is so much room in the 'cut out' seating area that it makes it easy to get back there and help another rider get prepped. The storage lids also are great for binding slime, ropes, gloves, handles, all the gear that the rider needs is just an arm's length away.

As far as the tower issue goes, i think it was nicely stated that any tower can be installed in the Tige, as every boat is reinforced with 3/4 penske composite board and 1/2 aluminum. I know of quite a few tower manufacturers, please email me if you need any questions answered aaron@tige.com The Razor tower by samsom is the easiest tower to collaspe, and it looks great. I will try to post the address or a picture. All you do is loosen 2 screws, and it scissors inward.

Regarding the fuel consumption, the waterski mag buyers guide tested the malibu VLX with 6.2l 400hp and it did 0-30 in 5.5 sec and 0-36 in 7.0 seconds. The 22ve was tested with a 340 hp it did 0-30 in 5.2 sec and 0-36 in 6.9 seconds. This is noteworthy! The bu had %15 more horsepower (with tested engine) is six inches shorter and 4 inches narrower, and weighs 392lbs less, yet still performs slower. This is HUGE. Also take note, the coast guard capacities, Tige 14 people and VLX 11 people.

I know that i should wrap this up, but i just cant stop! The TAPS system works, and it allows you so many different options. It gives you control of the wake at your finger tips, and it gives you added control of driving your boat too (like your I/O's trim switch but different when used with a convex hull).

Hmmm, i guess i will let others chime in, and then i will go from there!

Spoke to the dealer today. Said last year they mostly put on Monster Towers as the alternative. Not sure I like the look of those. Went to the website, maybe I need a new calendar.

He also mentioned Metacraft (sp?) and Wrangler's tower.

Maybe I should just go with the original and spend a couple of extra minutes on the tower.

I think if you are doing that tower every day, you will want something easy. The Samson is terrific for that and very very sturdy. I wish I had one.

                        Condor,
You didn't comment on the increased foot spacing required on a Ve... making some towers unusable...please comment.

                          Hmm,

You know i read that comment and it had not been brought to my attention before. I will have to check it out and measure the distance. The typical distance for a tower between mounts is usually about 48 inches plus or minus a few. I know that having a larger windshield costs Tige more to put on our boats, that means there is a good reason behind it. Many would argue that more windshield is more protection for the wind. I see your point TTG, (can i call you that?). I used to work in a tower manufacturing company, and when we came across a large spread like this we would simply use a side mount instead of a top mount, if that helps any...

I have contacted Scott, the owner of Samson Towers, and he will be sending us a picture. The Razor tower is great, looks killer, and is the easiest to collaspe that i have ever seen.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread a little, remember we want to sell the Ve over the VLX!!!!

                          Taps up,
                          ab

PS- is the fuel efficiency not that important to prospective buyers?

                            Towers...

The Phatte Budde tower that we have on our new boat collapses down with two handles undone. If you need to take the side supports all the way off...which I don't imagine will be an issue since they are about the same height as the windshield...there are two more on each side that hold those up. All in all, it's a great tower and pretty easy to use. Very heavy duty and sturdy as well... The other thing that we like about it is that you get a very open air feel with our tower if you don't have the bimini up since it sweeps so far back.

Finally, we liked the phatte budde tower because it didn't look like every other tower out there... The new ones without the big billet piece that we got are very clean looking and in someways are nicer looking than ours... Well, ok...as nice looking as ours...

The other point that really helped sell us was the ride of the Tige. Very sturdy and no big slaps when you cut through a double up wake or initiate a fallen rider pick-up. Handles big swells and chop like butter...

                            Hope this helps...

If it is that close of a decision, make sure you factor in the dealer. If you could go one way or the other, I personally would make the dealer the deciding factor. Which one is going to treat you better AFTER THE SALE. Talk to other customers. Talk to the service manager. Look at the service facility. You are not just buying the boat, you are buying the dealer (and their service) as well...
