2006 20i keeps going into reduction mode

Just bought a 2006 20i from family member so i know the boat's history and it has never done this before. While engine is running, both at speed and at idle while sitting in slip boat will go into what I have been told is reduction mode. Alarm will sound and boat will go to idle rpm level, and transmission will remain engaged. Only way to get out of reduction mode is to turn off boat and restart. All insturment gauges remain at normal levels, water temp, oil pressure and volts all remain normal and do not fluctuate. All oil and transmission levels are good. This started two weeks ago, and freqeuncy increased to almost every five minutes this weekend.

I have called a local dealer and spoken with a technician. They say this could be a warning of several issues, but will have to connect computer to do diagnostics. They did say that a 2006 24v had a similar problem and it was loose wires in the ignition/key assembly.

Has anyone else had a similar problem, and what was solution.

I had the same issue and after checking everything I could and tightening all the loose connections. I had no choice but to replace the throttle assembly. Fixed my problem but the assembly wasn't cheap.

Thanks for info, greatly appreciated. Did you also have to replace or change out the automatic speed set assembly, or was it only the throttle assembly? Just acquired the boat and joined the forum tonight, very impressed with with how friendly and eager to help fellow owners are! Great site!

Does your 06 have the Marine Power 340 EFI? Does it have the Tige EIDB Dual Battery system? If so, low battery voltage in either battery can send the ECM into limp-mode and prevent throttle up.

Also, if the knock sensor wire is left off during winterizing, the ECm will again prevent throttle up.

Mike: Thanks for the reply. Yes, the boat does have the Marine Power 340 with EFI. It does not have the Dual Battery system. I think the battery is good. It tested ok on my charger, but it did sit in the boat through the winter, so I am going to take it to battery shop and have tested, it may have a bad cell. If there is low voltage, will that send the ECM into reduction mode? I would assume it would. Also, I am not familar with the knock sensor, where is it located? Thanks again for your help! Tim

The low voltage issue was on the dual battery boats and was due to the ECM seing reference voltage form both batteries. If one was low, the ECM would see the differecne and set a code 81 and go into limp mode.

The knock sensor on your engine will be the starboard side block drain and have a single blue wire connected to it. IIRC.

Next option could be the throttle position sensor on the level.

We had the same problem on our 2006 24ve and it turned out to be the throttle actuator. Once replaced the engine ran perfectly and the alarm never goes off now.

An update on the "reduction mode" issue I was having with my 2006 20i, after going through all the suggestions made by members here on the forum, found that the problem was a loose ground wire going into the connection blade on the battery, battery connection was tight, the wire to the blade was loose. Over time I think this worked itself looser which explains the initial low number of events, and then more frequent the looser it got. As it got looser the interuptions in the circuit became more common. After tightening this, have not had a single problem, and used the boat all last week over the holidays. Many thanks to all who posted with suggestions to solve this problem, your help was invaluable in isolating the issue and finding solution. Hope my experience can help anyone in similar situation.
