    gel coat repair

got a quote from dealer to fix this and thinking I'll try it myself. quote was almost $800. the main issue is the line above the rub rail. how would I mimic that line in 1 application?

can I call spectrumcolor and tell them my boat year and model and they will know what color white I need?

    thanks to all.

    OUCH!

I did the spectrum repair 3 years ago and it worked great.

I have a heavy duty buffing wheel, pads and used 3M finesse-it compound (1,2 and 3) and it came out perfect.

Its really not that hard, but it is time consuming because of the depth. it will take about 3 to 4 applications and fair amount of time. That's why you were quoted $800. Wish you luck.

The spectrum website has the color codes, I called TIGE to double check. I did some repairs with their patch paste that came out pretty good. I was learning as I went so got better as I moved around the boat. That is pretty serious damage, may need fiberglass repair before the gel coat. The biggest issue I had was air bubbles that show up when you start sanding, lots of heat seems to help with this applied right after you apply the gel coat. I used a heat gun but heard a propane torch is better but could not bring myself to do it.

Stay with a hair dryer if this is your first swing.

Nobody, I stay with the heat gun but I have heard yacht guys down in your neck of the woods use the torch, is this true?

Sure, but these guys do this stuff all the time. If you burn your gel coat, or discolor it from excess heat, someone is going to blow a gasket.
