    Lake Powell Tips and Suggestions

    Hey everyone!

I am heading to Lake Powell for the first time in 3 weeks and would love to get some input from people that have been there recently. The last time I was there I was 4 so I don't remember anything!

We plan to launch at Wahweap and camp for 4 days. Any suggestions on good places to look for a nice beach or must see areas for day trips? Also, what areas are the best for wakeboarding? And are there any things that we need to look out for besides the wind? I have read a lot about people bringing spare gas cans. I thought this was something that was not allowed in that area and not recommended on a boat ever. Please correct me if I am wrong as it would be nice to have a backup.

All help and suggestions are appreciated

We went to Powel a few years back. The best thing I brought with me was my GPS and a good map of the lake. The lake has many markers that make it easy to know where you are. Also when we were there, there really were no beaches to camp on. Not sure is this was due to the water level or if that is just the way it is. Cliffs (walls) every were. Really cool and strange at the same time. We went to Rainbow Bridge that was nice to see.
Tige, it's a way of life!

Just got back from Powell 9 days ago and will be going back in the middle of July. I'm happy to report that the water level is down about 20 feet from last year, which has exposed some really nice sandy beaches. If you are leaving from Wahweap, then camping in warm creek would be a good option. IMHO, the water seems to be smoother in warm creek than in other areas close that are close to wahweap. It is close to wahweap that you can make gas runs to the Marina, that being said, I would probably take a couple of cans with me just to make more time on the water. People bring extra gas cans with them all the time. You could camp at Lone Rock beach if you don't mind crowds. There could also be a couple of nice spots directly across the bay, to the left of Castle Rock (as you approach it leaving Wahweap). Like Whitlock said, a map would be very helpful. The most detailed maps that I've seen can be found in the Lake Powell magazine that you can pick up at most any store in Page (wal-mart is a sure bet). Make sure and secure your camping gear (tents, etc.) because when the winds pick up they can wreac havoc on tents and other stuff and ruin your trip. For more detailed information go to "Wayne's Words" website and look at the recreation discussion boards. The people there are dedicated Powell lovers and are more than happy to help out. Just google waynes words and you will find it. Powell is one of the most beautiful lakes and obviously one of my favorites as well. Have fun and be safe.

I would agree that Warm Creek is the place to camp. Close enough for fuel and ice and there are some really nice camping beaches. Also Warm Creek gets smooth for playin in the water. Make sura and get a good map of the lake and area before launching though. The lake is marked very well but only with mile numbers so a map is necessary. I do Powell 2 or 3 times every year and you will have a great time as long as the weather is good. I also agree to stay away from Lone Rock because it gets very crowded with RV campers there.
Have a great time on your vacation.

            Don't drive around after dark.

Watch where you are going. THose cliffs you see above water are underwater too. It is not unusual to be in 300 feet of water and see a rock right under the surface a long ways from shore. Fortunately, the water is pretty clear, and you can see it coming, in the daylight.

Go to Dangling Rope marina and get ice cream on your way back from Rainbow Bridge. Ice cream when camping is quite a treat.
            Be excellent to one another.
