RZ2 Catalytic Converter or no? 2011 or 2012?

HI all! I've lurked for awhile but this is my first post.

I'm trying to decide between two boats.

One is a 2011 RZ2 brand new. It has the Clean Emission System. The dealer told me he gets about 25% lower fuel consumption with the catalytic converter.

The other is a 2012 brand new. It does not.

Otherwise there are pros and cons for each boat but the price and option list is about the same.

Any other 2011/2012 issues I should be thinking about?

    Thanks in advance.

I have the 2011, but one change I really like in the '12 is that they moved the built-in cooler from behind the driver to under the center bow cushion.

Another change is the diamond pattern in the '12 upholstery. That just comes down to personal preference.

I thought the CAT (CES) system was required as of 1/1/11, but maybe that's just for California.

One more thing about the CES motor -- some people think that because it runs cleaner, you don't need a fresh air exhaust. I don't know that the difference has ever been measured or documented, but I know that opinion is out there.

      Welcome to the site.

Thanks Coop. I am actually north of the border and for us that legislation is just coming in to play now. Most 2012 boats don't have CES up here.

Did some research on FAE. Sounds like it might be the answer to the question actually. And making things quieter is a huge bonus. If we go with FAE it sounds like we'll be fine without CES.

          Learning lots of acronyms.
          Thanks again. Very helpful.

The CATANIUM exhaust is on all U.S. Tige's built after 1/1/11.I tried to order non Catanium exhaust in February 2011 but couldn't.

In canada they were only required on 1/1/12 and up builds.

I would like to know how they determed that they were getting 25% less fuel economy, the cat doesnt make the exhaust anymore restrictive, this sounds like the 1970s when people were removeing cats because they thought theyed pick up gas mileage and performance.

I'd go 2012 simply because it is newer!

I'm pretty sure he just kept records of consumption per hour and compared the two models (one pre CES and one immediately after. Perhaps there were other differences but he suggested there weren't.

I am a big proponent of the PCM Cat engines and also run an FAE.

But. Moving the cooler up to the bow really frees up under seat space on the starboard side. The cooler under the starboard bench limits the amount of surf ballast I can fit. For that reason alone, I would choose a 2012.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Pulled the trigger on the 2012. Can't wait to get wet.

Go with Fresh Air Exhaust as well. I have a 2007. Just put it on and the sound difference is amazing. It's almost an IO now..... Another thing I noticed is when wake surfing. The exhaust sometimes is visible, like a cloud of fog. It is a bit distracting and wouldn't occur with FAE. A good example of this is a recent Chase Hazen Mywake video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwiQh...ayer_embedded#!

I have no idea of what boat he's behind. However, it's Chase Hazen and he's sponsored by Tige. Can't imagine it's not a z3, but who knows. To me it looks and sounds like there is no FAE on the boat. I will never have another inboard boat without a FAE or something similar.

X2 on this if anything I would think it would be less because now you have fuel managment systems.
