    5.7L vs. 6.0L

For those who have upgraded, was it worth the $$$ ? It would be in a new 24Ve.

WakeHavasu-- I noticed you went for it, how does it perform? What were your thoughts on the 340hp, seems like most who have the 24 footers are happy. Whats the fuel economy like?

    Thanks.

I have the 340hp on my 05 24V and am happy with it. I occasionally use as much as 1300 pounds ballast and 3 people (small crew) and feel it does just fine with wakeboarding with the Acme 537 prop.

I have used 2500 pounds (same ballast and a bunch of overweight relatives) and it seemed to drag just a little, but performs better than I expected for the 'weaker' engine.

I occasionally just wish I could go faster. If at a big lake, it would be nice to beat the low 40's speed I have now.

If I recall right the bigger engine is a pretty penny, and I don't regret saving that money. Does anyone know how much the upgrade is? I've never been in a boat with the upgraded engine.

You asked about fuel economy - I get about 7 gallons per engine hour. Due to down time and idling, I have never run out on a day I started full. I may spend more time floating than others.

Thanks for the reply. I do spend most of the summer at the big lakes, Hvasu,Mead, Mojave, etc. A lot of the guys I go boating with have much faster boats than I do (non wake/ski boats) and it would be nice to not be so far behind when meeting up. Also want no dragging with a full boat while towing.

I think the upgrade is around$4-5K. Anyone verify this?

          Dan --

I was at Tige Watersports (Corona) yesterday and was told it is a $4k upgrade. The guys there continue to recommend the 340 on the 24's unless you're going to be in high altitude a lot.

Like talltigeguy, I have the 2005 24V with the 340 and have never felt underpowered. I even took it to Big Bear last summer and felt it did fine. I too would like a little more top end speed, but I see that as more a function of an inboard wakeboard boat and not necessarily the engine. I'd be curious to know how much more top end speed the 385 gets you.

          Happy shopping.

            It's a very subjective question.

If they offered a 7 L I would have bough that!

            I am compensating for a small….

No, seriously I cannot imagine owning a boat (even a wakeboat) that does not break 50.

I have yet to break it in and I’ll report with the GPS speed when I do.

My “feeling" is 53 MPH with my boat; three people, no ballast and its 6L.

I too go to large lakes; Havasu and Powell with the hopes of visiting Tahoe a couple of times annually.

Wake Havasu and I went different paths with regards to the power plants on our boats. I went with the 340 hp motor and in our short relationship, it's been great. I had eight people in the boat last weekend and it never felt underpowered or sluggish. In fact, I really had to adapt my driving since my old boat had a much slower response. Even with my 6'4" 230lbs friend, I never had any problem giving him a strong pull up. Everything was smooth and felt great.

Top end, you got me there... I doubt we'll cross 50...but I have always figured that if you are buying a wake or ski boat, you are buying it for the torque and pull...not the high end. I have top end envy as well... But my wallet won't let me go buy a second 100mph go fast boat...

Wake Havasu went engine...I went stereo... It's all in where your priorities are and as mentioned before, it's completely subjective. What's important to you...

You can also increase your top end by propping it differenty. The down side is you will lose that hole shot, pull we love. My .02

Re fuel economy: Save lots of gas and don’t buy a boat! [/B][/QUOTE]

                  Easier said than done.

I'm not trying to penny pinch, I've been boating a long time and know that it is not a cheap hobby. I'm just trying to justify the upgrade and want to know what the difference is in fuel economy compared to the 340hp. What did Tige tell you with regards to GPH on your 6.0L?

                    hey guys,

the 6.0l tends to burn more gas simply because it is driven harder...know what i mean? I dont think it is necessary BUT it is nice. I was at a boat show last weekend and i saw a super-charged 6.0l by marine power.....they are supposedly working on the amount of boost available, in order for them to be able to warranty it. I heard it can do 500hp, but they are gonna tune it down so that the motor will last!

Seriously though, the 340 does awesome. Waterski mag says that the 340 does 0-30 in 5.5 in the 24ve that is very respectable (the comparable 'bu does 0-30 in 6.2 seconds...oh yeah with a 450hp 8.1l!!! Now talk about fuel consumption!

                      I had a quote for a 6.0L for under $4,000.

i have a 05 24v with the 340 horse. has plenty of power to pull boarders. my top speed is usually around 45 mph. that is fully loaded with 10 people & ice chests, and boards. dont have any sacs yet. we are still beginners. love the wake. it would be nice to be able to get across the lake a little faster, but beggers cant be choosers! this boat is made to ski, and board behind, not to race! they dont make them both ways. wake board boats dont go fast, and fast boats are no good for boarding.

I am under the impression that the 5.7 makes more low end torque than the 6.0. Nobody will release any dyno #'s to disprove this rumor.

I have never seen a tige break 50mph. 49.3 mph gps lake elsinore 24v 6.0L. Good luck with the 53mph
