Vol Grad is Moving - Need Help on Lake Lanier, GA

Well it is official - I have a new boat coming to Oregon which I am going to move all the way across the country. I am working out of Norcross and will likely buy a home on Lanier, but need some help from the locals on how to get around, the hot spots, areas to avoid, etc.

I will be landed with the new set up late June and also looking to meet some fellow Tige owners in GA. I am also looking to get feedback on the Tige dealer network in this area. Lastly - trailering 2000 plus miles; what should and should I not do/think about?

Again, I appreciate your help and input.

Sad to hear you are leaving the Northwest. I agree with Timmy have it wrapped and shipped on a flatbed.

How are the loaded and unloaded on a flat bed? I assume I could have it picked up at my dealer and dropped off at the dealer in Atlanta? Any idea of cost - standard corporate relo does not cover boats.

Crane or big fork lift. PM WABoating, he did it from FL to WA.

You could also PM Jbort, IIRC he lives in GA.

I was thinking of getting an extra factory shipping cover and pulling it back - what are the risks other than the obvious of trailering that long. It will be a new trailer and will roll down the highway just as it came in on the truck (covered and protected).

First off, you are going to love that lake. I grew up water skiing on that lake cause I had family that lived in Woodstock just down the road.

Second, what about your trailer WHEELS?! I want two of them.

I'll get a couple of pics, but will sell them for $30/each - includes tires that is in descent shape. Pretty cheap, but they are taking up space and it's a pre-moving sale. Let me know your interests.

                  Hi there Tnvolgrad:

Great to hear your news. We live in Alpharetta which is north of Atl about 25 miles and have lake place on Lanier (Angler's Rest) we hit every weekend. Definitely want to help out and get together. St68 also lives here and we surf/hang out alot. Lanier is a big place and real nice to live on but look at commute time because traffic here is ugly. Norcross is north of town and lanier is reachable but depends on where u buy etc. The lake is created where Chatahoochee and Chestatee rivers come together and dam makes the lake. The south part of the lake is super busy on weekends and that's where all the real big marina's (1000+ slips) are located so it gets REAL rough and ugly but during the week for full timers its wonderful. So the trade-off here is south part of lake is closer but weekends are ugly-busy especially BIG boats on 40-60 foot range that make big wake mess almost all over. We are up near 400 outlet mall off the Chestatee river and really like it here but its a hike to Norcross although our lake neighbor (selling his house) also goes to Norcross for work but now works from home 2-3 days a week. Water depth is a key topic since the lake goes up and down alot depending on rain or lack thereof so water depth at dock is REAL SUPER important. We've been through 3 bad droughts where the water dropped 16-20 feet and while its gets ugly we picked a great spot and been lucky to keep going so its a factor in new home location. Not sure of your home price range but there's also a house across our cove too that may be available (Julian Rd). One other item: there is no Tige dealer here for now. the prior one dropped the line 2-3 yrs ago and not replaced. Gainesville Marina was the dealer and they do my service and had good luck w Rickie and crew but u got 2012 Rz2 (suhweet) and they may not be up to speed. happy to chat and definitely want to have u over. Lakewakes guy that makes wake surf boards is in Conyers about 30 miles east of Atl and we have gotten to know Marc and thats a cool angle. Send PM. Jim

On the move thing....if using a moving company for furniture and stuff they might do the boat too since many of them will do cars and a boat might work same way. perhaps an idea.

Welcome to Georgia!! Much closer to Vol country. My wife is a Vol grad. I think jbort covered the overall view. If I can help in any way I am happy to do so. I will look forward to meeting you.

One after thought about what jbort is saying about traffic here... Atlanta can be a great city if you manage the traffic... if your work allows you flexiblity on when you go and leave then you would be very flexible where you live. Rush hour is very deflating here and is a big waste of time if you are stuck in it... the rush is from 7 to 9am and then 4:30 to 7 at night. Some people leave before the am rush hour then come home after the evening rush... all I see in that is no time for the water and no time with the family, both will leave you a crusty lonely 70 year old!! The ideal would be to work from home and go to the office as needed... the 2nd best would be leave for work at 9 and leave for home at 3 or 4. Right now you are not paying big premiums for Lake Lanier waterfront so I do feel it is a good value for your money.

If I remember correctly, I think EWOK also trailered his new RZ2 from South Texas up to the Pac NW...and chronicled his travels. I dont recall a "look back/lessons learnt" - but I'd think he could share his thoughts on it.

We used to be in Atlanta and rode out of Gainesville Marina. That is actually where we bought our boat. We have since abandoned Lanier and are loving Hartwell. Surfing and riding all the time with a 24ve and tons of ballast so if your ever up that way let me know.
