Puts the exhaust gasses into the prop wash. Reduces noise and carbon monoxide levels for people in the boat and those close behind the boat (like surfing).

Turns you boat into a quiet living room so everybody can have a conversation.
I ride on a Bu sometimes with a cat engine and it is very quiet with no FAE. In fact my goal is to get mine as quiet as his. I am almost there with fae but may add some sound dampening material around the emgine cover walls. I like, the FAE for the quiet ride more than I am concerned about CO when surfing. I think Robert wake 9 posted on this a while back with regards to his z3. I own an 03 with the Merc engine and dual exhaust so FAE was a must to quiet things down to an enjoyable level. If you are happy with how quiet the ride is then you just have to decide where you stand on reducing CO. I would say just get out enjoy the boat for awhile and then decide what priorities you have for modifications and upgrades.
Whether FAE is needed on a Cat PCM engine recently came up in threads here and here. In brief, a cat will reduce but not eliminate CO. A little poking around informal research suggests post-cat levels may still be enough for a headache after a long day.
Several cat-PCM owners with an FAE have agreed the noise reduction is not all that much (because so quiet to begin with).
Noise reduction is just a happy benefit of eliminating CO via FAE. CAT motors reduce it but, they do not eliminate it. That is the whole point of the FAE in the first place, to eliminate CO while under way. If I spent 100k on a new boat, I wouldn't even blink at $500 for the best upgrade you can get. F the noise, I like breathing oxygen.
