Question on steering cable bracket...

When they replaced my transmission under warranty, the tech had to remove the rudder to remove the propshaft. I now notice that the bracket that holds the end of the steering cable is "rattley". It permits the end of the cable to move around a bit. The part of the bracket that is bolted to the hull is solid. I did not inspect this area before the service so I don't know if it's a new condition or not.

I'm trying to get a photo of the part in question but my camera battery died. Once it's charged I'll post a photo.

Is this normal? Should there be some "play" in the bracket that holds the end of the steering cable?

How much play? I just replaced mine and it basically has zero. Is it possible they left a bushing out? Not sure if there is one there to begin with or not but, if there is excessive play, that would be my first hunch.

My steering cable support bracket has the same play that your taking about. This is a normal condition. You’re talking about the piece with for 4 ¼ inch bolts with nylon locking nuts on the top right? That piece clamps over a ball that is bolted to the aluminum bracket in the floor. It acts as the pivot point for the cable.

That piece also clamps around the tube that the steering cable goes through and the nut on the steering cable threads onto this tube.

To clarify, here is what I'm talking about:



The black bracket around the cable is tight to the bracket. The silver bolt through the mounting plate on the hull is tight as well, to a hexagonal piece that looks like a thread coupler (you can just see it on the other side of the mounting bracket). But there is some space between the hex coupler and the black bracket with the four bolts, and therefore the black bracket can rattle around a bit.

Sometimes things are supposed to have play in them. Other times, not. I don't know what was going on here before the tranny swap.

It appears that I could back off the silver bolt, tighten the hex coupler to the black bracket, and then tighten the silver bolt again. (This presumes the hex coupler is long enough.)

Yep that is the piece I was thinking. The Hexagonal piece has a ball on the end of it which the piece with four bolts clamps over. Have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you watch this and you will see why it needs play. I just replaced my steering cable and had all that apart. That play is normal.

The stainless bolt is bolted to a pivot ball stud, the black bracket is supposed to float on the stud for the cable movement, but make sure that the stud isnt moving due to the bolt being loose.

yup did my steering cable 2 weeks ago and its a pivot point for the movment of the cable
