    oil filter laugh

Just thought I would post this up so you guys could have a good laugh. Getting ready to put the boat in the water and was doing my first oil change since buying it. All good until I went to take off the filter. Long story short after two different type of filter wrenches which resulted in turning it into a crushed beer can. Went with the screw driver threw the filter which didn't budge it but tore a 2" wide hole in the filter. So ended up taking the mounting bracket off the motor and put it in a vice and tried some more which resulted in ripping the filter in half. So had to go with the torch and a 3lb hammer and a chisle and beating the tar out of it to get the filter off. LOL.

anybody ever had a filter stuck on that bad?

Nope, wow, that's one stuck filter. How long was it on there?

Next year they'll be going into a thinner ga. metal to save cost.

Wow, how messy was that in the boat? I would have been swearing like a sailor.

My guess is the previous owner didn't oil the filter ring before tightening the piss out of it.

Yeah there were a few words said in the proccess. Lol. Not sure how long it had been since the previous owner did an oil change. I was able to keep the mess contained by placing a few grocery bags under the filter while it was still in the boat. Then gave up and took the whole filter and bracket out of the boat. I've never had any filter be so stuck.

Been there, done that. It happened on a my buddy's jet boat. One would never think a stupid filter would cause so much headache but, in that scenario, it produces pronfanities in drove. It turns one into Earl Weaver.

He actually ended up taking it to mechanic at a service station and he used an air chisel. Yikes! He got it off no problem though.

I did that on the X45 once. Standing on my head trying to torque on that thing was a beast. I have a scar on my arm where the carpet gave me a carpet burn.

For those that do not know, this likely can be prevented by putting a bit of the motor oil on the gasket as you screw the filter on. And oil filters do not need to be tightened very much at all to make a good seal. Someone else more knowledgeable might chime in, but I have heard a good rule of thumb is hand tighten as much as you can, then 1/4 turn with an oil filter wrench is more than enough.
                      Be excellent to one another.

Lube the filter seal with a film of oil, spin on filter until it contacts the seal then turn 3/4 to 1 turn by hand.

I put oil on the seal and the threads and I have never used a wrench to tighten. I had tighten as far as it will easily go. I have never had any filter leak.
