    Marine Power vDrive Impeller Tricks

    All:

I have read the replacing the Jabsco Impeller on a Marine Power 340 in the HOW TO section. It has pictures of the impeller on the inboard "i" drive from Lee, it doesn't have pictures from the perspective of doing in on a vDrive. I have had the impeller changed every 75-100 hrs over last few seasons, but time for me to learn how to do it. (Where to do it!) There is a video on YouTube of a good ole boy in a seed cap from Marine Power showing--but the engine is on a crate, not in a boat. http://youtu.be/wpBoVRAAZhI
I found another video of a nice guy with a Moomba changing impeller, but I think he shot the video more to show off his collection of tattoos on his arms, chest, back and calves. Nothing against tattoos, but I wanted to see more impeller than ink. http://youtu.be/qYllXQ2_xX8

I bought an impeller and also an impeller puller last fall. Will be getting the boat out of storage next week so I'd like to start the year off with a fresh impeller.

Anyone have any tips/tricks on where and how to best reach/change the impeller on a 2007 24ve with Marine Power 340?
    -From top?
-Remove the dividers & access from the side?
    -Which side?
-Someone wrote to tape mirror on the wall to see better...
-Anything else I should do whilst down there?

I'll move this thread over to the HOW TO section, but thought I'd start here first to a wider audience.

I do everything (v drive, transmission, oil, impeller, fuel filter, connect everything back together from being winterized, grease the rudder, pick up leftover pieces from the factory, test the bilge, etc..) at once while it is all open. I had the batteries out, I store them in my basement during the winter, and went from the port side locker to get to my impeller. I had the divider out as well. I used to screwdrivers to get mine out. You want to be careful when putting the bolts back in, they are soft and will break.

I think your over analyzing it! Thats something I often do whenever it comes to mechanical stuff.

Its pretty straight forward when you actually do it. I just come from the top and lay over/hover over the engine. My head is facing the aft of the boat. I dont even use a puller, just a screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. You basically remove the cover and man handle the impeller out, whichever way you can get it out (sides or the top). Putting it back is straight forward too, make sure you have the gasket on too.

I changed mine from the starboard side, but i'm only 5'6".Skippa is taller with longer arms so he can reach it from the port side.
I do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

wow...how did that quote make it past the censors?

Thanks for the tips. I'll take pictures when I do the actual work and post back what I found easier to access the impeller.

On the rudder-do you use bearing grease like for the trailer wheels or some other sort of lubricant?

I go over the top laying facing aft. I have hard tanks in the transom area, so there is really no access from the sides. Don't drop the screws. I use the puller, I tried screwdrivers, but was concerned about damaging the bore.

It is a 2 on a difficulty scale from 1-10, unless you over tighten the cover screws and break one.
