    New boat owner

    Hey everyone! I'm new to this site and I have enjoyed reading all of the threads. I am in the market for a boat and I am leaning fully towards a Tige. This will be my first boat to have so I am asking the pros on which boat do you think would be a good buy for my first? I live in Fort Worth, TX so fortunately I am close to Abilene!

    I guess my question would be ... New or Used? I know there are pros an cons for each but I want to hear from others.

    Please let me in on all the ins and outs I need in order to make a decision on a boat!

    New is nice but a new RZ2 or RZ4 will depreciate 25K the first year, if not more, then depreciation tapers off slowly from there. If you want ton of room, the RZ pickle fork is the way to go.

      First decide what it is you want to do most.Example Ski,Wakeboard,Surf,Barefoot or Foil.Then set up a budget you want to stay in.My first boat was used. I kept it for 2 years and then bought a V-drive.A inboard boat will do the same things a V-Drive will do, it just won't make as big a wake.The inboard will be better for skiing as it has a smaller wake.The inboard doesn't have as much interior room as a V-drive.Determine how many people you will carry out on your boat.Note you will instantly gain friends when you own a boat.Make sure they know up front if they are going to enjoy your boat they have to give back in some way.Example help you wipe it down,bring food and drinks,Pay for gas or at least help with it.If you go with a used boat make sure you have a independent Marine Surveyor check it out.It can save a lot of money and hassle in the future.If you buy from a dealer,make sure you get some sort of warranty[at least 90 days].If you need more specifics just fill in some of the blanks for us.There are many very knowledgeable people on this sight.Good Luck.

        We will be mostly interested in wakeboarding, surfing and of course the random tubing experience. I probably won't have more than 8-10 people on the boat at once. I would like to spend as little as possible of course but I want a quality boat that I know "should not" let me down. I would say my budget is within the 40-60k range.

        My concerns with buying a used boat is "how do I know it hasn't been mistreated by the previous owner". I'm not a boat expert and I wouldn't know the first thing to look at. I love the price of a used boat but not sure I love the quality.

        Why I want a new boat? I know Tige has it's warranty right now that should cover most things. I think living here in Fort Worth the dealership is well equipped to service my boat (I would have to dig deeper into that). I want the bells and whistles that come with having a new boat, plus the cleanliness.

        What is turning me off of a new boat? The initial decrease in the boats worth after the first year. I have been researching the prices of boats that are about 3 years old and seeing the depreciation. Honestly, there are not a whole lot of Tige's for sale ... or at least in Texas where I'm looking. This could be a good sign in that ... Tige owners love their boats and don't want to get rid of them? I'm not sure maybe someone can answer that question.

        I have visited with my local dealership and have looked at their inventory ... they still have some new 2011's that they are trying to get rid of and I don't know what a "good deal" is because of course ... they are just trying to make money (and make room for new inventory).

        Initially, me and my wife loved the new RZ2's ... after seeing the price and the size of the boat ... not sure that is a good "beginner" boat. Since then, I have kind of fallen in love with the RZR ... do ya'll think this is a good beginner boat?

          The no inboard boat is really a beginner boat. That said I've only driven an inboard. I would recomend the z1 for your price point and because you want to have 8+ people in the boat which can get tight in an rzr. I would say the z1 or r20 will fall close to your price ranges when custom ordered. Good luck with the search!

            I initially thought the Z1 would be a good fit as well ... but after looking at them in person, the Z1's traditional v-bow really makes the boat look small (seating). I know the RZR is a foot shorter than the Z1, but for some reason it looks more spacious. I like the price of the Z1 better ... is the price so much lower because it doesn't have the Tige Touch?

            Since I have brought up the TigeTouch ... how important is that? Would the Z1 be sufficient withouth the Touch?

              Nevermind, the Z1 does have the TigeTouch ... not sure what I was thinking. So why is the price of the Z1 better than the RZR?

                  The Z1 is a lot of bang for the buck,but so is the R20.If you consider used a RZ2 or 22VE would fall in your range. You could get either gently used in your range.Try Only Inboards and Boat Trader as they both have online sites.All the boats you've mentioned will work for your needs.

                      Leave the tower off and do an aftermarket

                        I understand the dilemma. I bought my first boat new because I knew I didn't know boats. I would say the alternative would be to pay a professional to inspect a boat as a prerequisite of the purchase. Ask your local Tige dealer if they offer such a service. I would also say that you can reduce risk by only considering boats with complete dealer service records. If a boat looks good and the owner was meticulous about professional service, it is likely they treated the boat well. I know many including myself do professional level care ourselves, so you can use some judgement in this area.
                        This may not be the best time of year to be looking for a good deal on a used boat, but if you have time and patience, you'll find what you are looking for. Check Search Tempest to look at craigslist and only inboards.
                        I have never heard anyone complain that their boat is too big, but you need to make sure you have a place to fit it and a proper tow vehicle if you will be towing.

                          One thing to do is have the owner take you out for a demo if you look at used. Watch them to see how meticulous they are. Do they remove shoes, do they take their time, if they tie it to the dock is it with care, when they pull the boat out what do they do? etc.... With out knowing much you can look in all the nooks and crannies and see what they look like. Check the oil and if you can get to it the vdrive and tranny oil. Have them pull you or you pull they and see what the boat it like. Try all the switches and make sure they work. Lift the cushions and check all the storage areas.

                          Not always but those that don't treat their boats like queens the boat will reflect the condition. That is not something that you can pick up for a demo. Even if someone does the service their selves the probably have a some record about what they have done. Not always do dealer service records reflect a true statement. I have seen, mine included that service was supposedly done but never was by the dealer.

                          My if you take your time and are picky you can get a used boat that is loaded for your price range. If you have to have one tomorrow you might be better going with a new one that has fewer options.

                            You pay a premium for the pickle.

                            Trust me the rzr can handle 10 people easily but it will be tight especially on a regular basis. You lose some in the bow with a z1 but gain a lot of beam. You can only really fit 2 in the bow of the rzr anyways because the pickle shape is kind of pointed instead of flat across the top

                              You will never complain about the boat being "too big" unless you are restricted in where you store it. If I were buying today, I would look for the RZ2. Beautiful, functional boats. Love my Tige, you will not regret that part of the purchase, no matter which one you get. Eagle Marine are straight shooters, with a lot of knowledge. Do your research on pricing and go from there. Spring is just the worst time to buy a boat when you are looking for a deal. Fall would have been better. Just keep asking questions, we on this forum are full of it...I mean answers. Just ask us!
