Teak swim platform

I am going to work on my teak swim platform if I dont have teak oil for it is there another kind that will work??

I don't know? I guess other wood oils would work. What other kind of oil do you have?

Automatic transmition fluid. Let it soak in overnight , the wipe off excess .

I ended up getting linseed oil I'll give that a try. Automatic tranny fluid never heard of that does it work good?

Especially when wet.I have a transmission shop i stop by and when it's raining the floors are like ice.The water pushes the transmission fluid out of the wood.

I used the linseed oil. the wood was in rough shape needed some TLC I trimmed an inch off all the way around routered the edges and sanded then oiled it looks great its back on the boat I have pics on my phone when I figure out how to get them on here, then I'll post.

Ah, sorry I missed this. You should get a cleaner for it first. It pulls all the crap & minerals out of the grain. Once clean, you should use a good teal oil. You can also use penefin but, it tends to dry and get really hard and starts looking like crap fairly soon after application. Teak oil is still the way to go in the long run.

I definitely wouldn't use gear oil. Nasty dude. I hate gear oil. It gets everywhere and you can always smell where it is.

I'll be interested to see how the linsead oil does. Need us updated.

Crap wish I would have known about the cleaner. Oh well it still looks good. I had never heard of the tranny oil thing until it was posted on here so I didnt do it would hate to wreck the wood or just be disapointed in it.

Looks great. Re-did mine last summer. Now I put a coat of teak oil on it after every trip. Keeps it looking nice. I'm one of those few that prefers the teak over the fiberglass.

The stuff at Lowe's is Teak Oil FINISH...not Teak oil. So it is a finish product that works very well. Purists would not use it on their teak.

Having said that, I used it this winter and it looks beautiful. I won't know until this winter how it holds up.

But without multiple deep treatments and repeat applications, I am afraid the teak was just too much work, so I turned to the Teak Oil Finish.

I do Like the teak as well but the fiber glass does seem a little easier to maintane. but the price to change over isnt worth it so I'll just stick with teak. But now I wonder if I'm comitted with the linseed oil or can I switch and use teak oil? Good to know about teak oil and teak oil finish. if you use teak oil do you put a coat of oil finish on after?

I've never used the finish. I've used lots of that Meguiars though.
