    filling up

anybody had this issue getting gas.

I am filling up and when it gets close to full it shoots out and all over the place? usually I have had this in the past a little.. but this boat its like turbo shot. tried pulling off the other side gas cap to let it vent from that too but did not seem to change much.

only time it has not, is if I monitor it as it filling and can hear it getting full and slow down...

just wonder if that is the nature of the beast?

Mine does that and it's an '07. Guess things haven't changed! What I do now is fill the boat on the first click of the handle. Takes a lot longer but I haven't had that happen since I started doing that.

Happens to me. From what I have read it is the nature of the beast. Nothing like a gas shower.

Just the nature of the beast. Had outboards, I/O and inboards, all do it. Just have to pay attention and listen.

X3 Everybody gets to enjoy a gas bath once or twice a year, then jump in the truck so everyone can shout out how much you stink. This is all part of the planned fun.

X4 - I just use the paper towels provided to create a buffer betweeen flying gas, myself and the boat. It seems to work well.
I wrap numerous paper toweling around the nozzel. That seems to catch the majority of it and stop gas from running over my stickers.

Here is the best explanation I can find about fuel splashing out of the vent and fill lines.

                  http://www.boatus.com/foundation/cle...uelSystems.asp

My technique is to use a rag wrapped around the filler neck and fill very slowly, I do half the expected fill at 1 click on the pump, then I keep my ear near the vent and my hand on the pump for the second half of the fill. I used to open the other gas cap as an extra vent until fuel splashed out that spot too. Luckily nobody was walking by and got fuel splashed in the face.

I fill at full speed and never get splashed. I found the right pump and I stick with it, even if if costs a few more cents p/gallon. Of coarse, this might all be but a sweet memory with the new tank and new fill but, I'm confident it will be ok.

I hardly every get a bath. Three tricks. Turn the gas nozzle upside down (handle the farthest up). Don't put the nozzle as far as it can go into the gas tank. If you have to fill up on the lake when it is wavy, or you have rollers coming in, slow down how fast the gas is pumping.

I have found those 3 tips are the key to avoiding a gas bath.

Just go by ear. The gurgling sound in the filler hose changes - has more high frequency content - when the tank fills and the fuel level starts working its way up the filler hose itself. As soon as you hear that, stop. The hoses on either side could still hold several gallons but you want that space for expansion in hot weather, and as insurance against the "gas shower".

This means put your ear up close to the nozzle and wait for the gas to flush out the wax.

Well this thread has been beyond helpful,

but mostly on the front that my wife and kids can read all your replies and relize that I am not the only one to soak up some petrol and get an earful of how great i smell!! LOL

I just wanted to verify that I was not the only dad\husband running around smelling like gas all afternoon..hahah

guess my logic was this.. if I can stand next to my car.. and check out while it fills... how come I cannot on my boat that costs x2 as much..hahah. Its the same thing right?

                            anyone got a match?

It is ridiculous how many people have this issue. You would think it would be sorted out by now. I know my buddy has always had this issue with his Ve. I've had it happen when I use the pumps with the bellows type boot on them. My "lucky" pumps have no such boots.
