Looking at R20

Hey guys I am looking at a new R20 but just wanted to get some more info. This isn't my first inboard but its in my price range that I am expecting to spend. What I am mainly concerned about is that I would be going from a boat that has 325hp to the 303hp 5.0L in the Tige. Is there a considerable difference between the 343hp and the 303hp??? Also the new Tige only is equipped with the 900lb. ballast system should i consider upgrading it or does it do decent like it is?? We usually just wake surf and wakeboard so the wake is what i was looking for more info about also. I will take ever ones opinion into consideration so any help would be great. I know that I should go test drive it for my self but my job along with the distance from the dealer just won't allow for it. So come on help me out!!

What is the size and weight of your current boat? This may help put the Hp difference between your current 325 and the Tige 303 into perspective.

Are you buying off the lot or spec'ing the R20 out? If spec'ing out, then I would consider the upgrade to the 343, especially if you boat at a lake with any elevation. If buying from the dealer's inventory, A prop swap will make a nice improvement.

Unless your regular riding crew is the Chicago Bears defensive line, then you would probably want to add some ballast for surfing.

I am looking at a 2011 that is left on the lot and it already has the 303 in it. Im coming out of a Moomba Outback v which is a 20 ft boat. I will look into trying to get them to bump up the ballast to more factory weight then the way it sounds.

There are alot of R20 owners in Texas and i've heard no complaints on power.Maybe some of those TO's will weigh in.

What part of east Texas do you live in? What lake do you usually ride on?

Live in Lufkin and have a place on Sam Rayburn so thats where I spend most of my time on the water. Except this year when it turned into a backyard pool like this past year then we hit the river behind the dam.

I think you will be fine with that engine but more power never hurts. If you plan on taking 8-10 people in the boat and trying to wakeboard with full ballast, that engine isn't exactly what you want but if you are in the 4-6 range and just want to surf, you will probably be ok. Talk to the dealer and take your regular crew out and check it out just like you would be going out on a normal weekend and see what you think.

Has the water come up much at Rayburn? We were there last May and it wasn't too bad but I know it went way down throughout the season. If the water comes up we'll probably go a couple times this year.

cant comment on the 303, but the wakeboard wake from this hull is very good for a boat its size, especially if you add a few extra sacs or people. i have threads around that show the rzr wake if youre curious

Mine has the 343, but I haven't taken it out yet so I can't tell you how it compares. I haven't been on the 303 either though. Everyone told me to go with the larger motor though because after a week I'd want to upgrade it. I would see if you can get one with the 5.7L and a tandem axel trailer as well.

Dude we got our R20 last summer and we couldn’t be happier. Looked at all different inboards and went with the Tige R20 with the 303hp because we kind of wanted to save gas if we could. We used the money we saved to order the boat the way we wanted it with bimini top, taps2, boat cover, snap in carpet, depth finder, dock lights, front cooler and all the crazy paint. We just wakeboard with normally around 5 people on the boat and I’m pretty good but to be honest we haven’t filled up the ballets because maybe I’m a little afraid and the pop is very clean and strong with speed at 20 and taps at 7. Never wake surfed but will look into that this summer.

Yeah I talked to Steve down at Texas Tige the other day and am still considering it also but the other boat is already sitting on a tandem axle trailer(one regret i made when i bought my last boat). As far as the lake goes if you went back in may you saw it at its best since then. We haven't received anywhere near enough rain to fill it back to average pool. The south end is in fair shape but being that i have a place on the north end i feel the hurt.

NICE rig!!! I am glad to hear that about the 303hp because i am looking at doing the same by saving gas and money to put it towards other options on the boat. Good to hear about the ballast also just don't want to under do myself when it is much easier to go ahead and get it the way i want it.
