I was out on the ILL river last year when the water level was at flood stage and the corp had all the locks down, so the current was moving pretty fast. With my small box anchor I was able to hold my boat and three other tied off to me and we did not move at all. It wasn't until we added a forth boat when the anchor broke loose.

Good point Duncan, don't forget to get a Danik hook. Makes it really nice to be able to let out more rode on your line any time you want and to disconnect it off your bow hook when your ready to pull anchor.

River current conditions make the box anchor shine.

I noticed where it has an issue is anchoring in a cove with shifting wind. One of its greatest strengths is also a weakness. The box anchor is designed to "flip" when the direction of pull changes. But each flip moves it a foot or so. We were in a cove using the box anchor with really shifty wind. Over several hours, we came closer and closer to the bank as the anchor walked its way back and forth.

That said, most other anchors would have released so I should not gripe.

I need someone local who will trade a large box anchor for a small box anchor

I have a Digger Anchor. It's nice cause when it gets stuck you yank the rope and and it straightens out so it's not hooked on anything. It also doesn't need a chain.
