I should say that I am planning on trading in my 4runner for a new expedition if it is offered with the Ecoboost. I get 18 in town, 21 highway and 12 towing with my 4 runner but we need a third row seat.
But to answer the OP, you don't NEED to get the bigger truck and of course it would tow better, but what you have should be more than enough truck.2009 RZ2, PCM 343, MLA Surf Ballast, Premium Sound.

take the following into considertion the weight of your boat, the weight of fuel and all accessories, weight of trailer and add all this up. then consider the no of people you are going to have in the truck with you and the luggage. Take a look at the vehicle ratings especially if it has differnet gear ratios. I have a 2007 duramax classic. It has over 173k miles, orginal breaks with less than half worn, original belt with no cracks. Diesels are more expensive however, it is not uncommon for them to last over 300 to 400k miles. Towing with this vehicle is nice because its not very often you get out of overdive on a hill. Changing your tranny fluid on a duramax is very simple. Both types have their pros and cons. Make the choice carefully so that you do not disappointed with your purchase and then need to sell and buy the other.

For the 2013 model year, Ford, GM, Ram and Toyota have agreed to adopt SAE J2807 which is "performance requirements for determining tow-vehicle gross combination weight rating and trailer weight rating." The new standard includes Acceleration: accelerate to 30 mph in 12 sec or less....
Climbing: climb the davis dam grade, 3000' climb over 11.4 miles, without dropping below 40mph with AC on full blast.
Launching: on a 12% grade, move 16' from a standstill 5 times in 5 minutes, uphill and downhill, in forward and reverse.
Weight: GVWR less than 8500 carry a 150# driver and passenger, above 8500 carry an additional 100#s of gear.
It will be interesting to see the new tow ratings after this test. The details can be found in the dec 2011 issue of car and driver.2009 RZ2, PCM 343, MLA Surf Ballast, Premium Sound.

In 2005, I drove the Ford, Dodge and Chevy. The Ford was the quickest out of the 3, but the Dodge and Chevy had 3:73 rear ends and the Ford a 4:30 something.
I ended up buying the Dodge Cummins that year and still have it.Boating Lake Mead since 2000
