    Help with TAPS?

I have a 1998 PRE 2050 WT and I have been having trouble figuring out whether or not my TAPS system is working.

First off, the gauge is completely broken and I need to order a new one.

The other thing is that when the boat is in the driveway and I push the button on the throttle up or down, the plate on the back does not move, but I do hear the electric motor working (sounds like an outdrive lifting/lowering). Is this normal or should it work in and out of the water?

One thing that makes me think it does work, however, is the fact that when I am driving it seems to make a small difference to the way the boat rides when I play with the TAPS.

Does anyone have experience with TAPS that may be able to help?

Or even anyone who can comment on how much of a difference it makes when the TAPS is down?

    Thanks!

Yes the TAPS should work in and out of the water.
My ram only moves about 2 inches. I have a different year then you and I believe yours is hydraulic, were mine uses an electric actuator.
Tige, it's a way of life!

yours should be a Bennett hydraulic unit. Should be a pump somewhere. Trace down your sound and I bet you need fluid.

Thanks for the tips. It sounds like its hydraulic since the noise comes from under the dash. I'll look into it. Off hand does anyone know what type of hydraulic oil it takes? same stuff as a brake line?

I believe it takes ATF. The pump on mine (1999 PRE2002) is in the driver's side gunnel by the rear bench seat. There are several threads on TAPS troubleshooting so check the forums.
My gauge quit working last year so I ordered a new one which didn't fix the problem. Bennett trim tabs is an excellent resource and helped me troubleshoot the problem. Their # is (954) 427-1400.

Yes the hydraulic units use ATF.

Yup. Low on ATF. If the motor sounds like its under the dash, it probably is. Mine is behind the helm bulkhead. It has a little carpeted cover that just screws into the bulkhead. You access it through the door in the walkway.

In case you need one, http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16667

If the plate isn't moving, the gauge isn't going to work. Start with the fluid first. Obviously.

Turns out it was completely out of fluid, added some and it works now, thanks for the advice. Now time to test it out and see if it is as great as people say...

Also curious to know, do you guys think it makes the wake bigger or just shape it? I just added about 750lbs of ballast to my boat if that'll make a difference.

TAPS won't make the wake bigger by itself - but your ballast will. TAPS will allow you to shape the wake.
