    Beeping Sound

It was 75 degrees out today so we took the boat out. The boat ran great other than a beeping sound. This sound only happened when we had the throttle down cruising about 30ish or higher at first. Then it happened at lower speeds/RPM's. When we backed the throttle off the soudn would go away. Temp, Oil, Battery were all fine according to the dash.

Any ideas? The only thing that I did over the winter is change out the TAPS RAMS. It also beeped when I moved them up or down. This did not happen in the garage while testing.

    Any ideas?

Only time I've heard beeping alarms was due to a low oil level, I do not know if the taps has a low level alarm or not

The beeping is typically an indication of overheating. If your temp is showing normal you might want to get your thermostat checked out.

        Temp??

Oh no....I would have known if it overheated right?? Wouldn’t it have smoked and possibly blown the head?

I was able to touch the top of the engine where the exhaust runs out and it was warm/cool....I was told if you can touch that while running your engine is a good temp??? Is this correct?

Other background....The last time it was ran was in Sept, since then it has been in the garage. I still need to perform the maintenance and change the impeller.

What engine, and is it a single beep or more.

            Engine

Mercruiser 350 I think...One single beep that can last a couple seconds.

I would suggest you get someone to plug in a scanner and see all data.
Cant tell much else without more imput.

                  Update

I completed the annual service this past week:

                  Impeller
                  Oil & Filter
                  Fuel Filter
                  Trans Oil Change

I have found out I can drive the boat normal without a beep. The beep happens when I move the TAPS up or down.

Does anyone know what alarm the TAPS would throw?

                  Thanks

There is no alarm that I know of related to the taps, I would suggest that a wire related to the taps is back feeding somewhere to the engine system, possible loose ground wire on taps forceing power to flow through other source.

                      Thanks Dom

I would guess that me replacing the RAMS on the back of the boat has something to do with this beeping sound? I pulled the old RAMS off by un-hooking the fluid lines to both RAMS and cutting the green actuator line on the one. I then installed the new ones by installing the fluid lines back on and soldering the actuator line back on.

                      Questions:

                      - I did keep all of the new green line from the new RAM and soldered it to the spot where I cut the old RAM off. I have a ton of slack that I was able to hide under the storage compartment. I did this in case I need to work on them in the future and need extra line. Would all of this slack cause the current to have to travel longer and throw an alarm?

                      - The throw (length the pistons extended out) on the original RAMS were longer. When they extended down they stretched further than the throw on the new ones. The new RAMS I ordered were built to the specs from TIGE on this year boat. Am I correct that this wouldn’t throw this alarm?

                      Thanks

                        ?

Does anyone know if the extra slack that I left from the new wiring could cause an alarm?

Instead of running the new wire to from the RAMs to the the pump etc I just cut the old wire at the old RAM and then soldered the new wire to it leaving the wire that came with the new RAMS.

This is out of left field but I agree there no alarms on the taps so it could be back feeding as Dom said but what about the trans fluid level?
I have had the intermittent alarm when the transmission fluid was not at proper level so you get beeps on bumps or when changing the attitude of the boat with the taps. Also the trans oil temp only has an alarm and light and is not reflected by the engine oil temp gauge.

Usually the trans calls for around 2qts, but that does not include the cooling lines and cooler so it is commonly under filled.

Take the boat out on the lake, get it warm, have a buddy drive, so when they stop and shut off the engine you can check the trans fluid level right away before it drains out of the cooler. Bring fluid and a funnel so you top it up right on the water.

This is easy, super cheap, and at worst eliminates a step in the trouble shooting process.

                            Thanks 4BW

I just completed the annual service and changed the trans fluid.

I will give that a try to make sure the level is correct.

                            Thanks for your response.

The velvet drive trans on the Merc 350 says 2 qts if I remember correctly but with the trans cooler system I always buy 3 qts and only use some of that 3rd qt, you have to go off the dip stick while hot and just shut off to get it right, too little or too much and you get the intermittent alarm.

I keep a note sheet on all things about my boat as I figure them out, below is my note on the tranes fluid

ATF Dexron III 2qts for tran + extra for trans oil cooling system, must be checked on dip stick when hot

Like I said this is a long shot, but to my knowledge only the engine temp or trans fluid temp set off that alarm, I like the idea of checking that thermostat too. What we know is you did the annual, service and changed the rams and then the problem occurred so checking the fluid levels helps eliminate the annual service
