    TIGE BALLAST SYSTEM

As one of my winter projects, I am considering a ballast system for my 2005 24V. There has been plenty of information about this passed around, but it seems to be in the middle of a lot of different threads. I also have some specific questions that are not yet answered.

I think my wakeboarding wake is very good with no ballast. If I feel ambitious, then I put 550 pounds up front and it becomes outstanding, more than enough to hurt myself with. Occasionally (2-3x per year), I'm feeling crazy and also put 400 pounds in each rear locker as well. The wake then is unbelievable. I don't really care to have a ballast system for wakeboarding, but surfing. Surfing lets me feel really cool without getting hurt. I've found that I usually want both 400's in the port locker and the 550 on the back seat on that side. I then get a really good surf wake. I hate taking all of that time to fill sacks up. I also had the sac slide rearward and now the back wall of my port locker is 2 inches further back than it used to be.

Here's what I've been looking at:
    1. Rival ballast system. I hear a lot of good things about this system. They have been building them for a while and seem to have it dialed in. I understand the Phoenix dealer does a lot of these. I talked to my Vegas dealer and he's done very few, and the time it took wasn't worth it. "I'd ask you what the most you are willing to pay and say it was $1,000 more than that" were his exact words. He has a smaller staff and can't afford to tie them up when people are waiting for their boats to get fixed. I could do it myself, and spend all winter getting it hooked up and praying I drill the fiberglass in the right spots. What are the advantages to this?

    2. Tige factory hard tanks. I could even just do one on the port side. I would still have to fill at least one sac, but it would be better, and safer than exploding the port storage hatch.

    3. The Pro-X series V-drive side sacks are just barely too long for that compartment (thus now they have made it a little longer). They custom make sacks I could custom order one that is much deeper, but it would still only get almost 700 pounds. It would make filling a lot easier, and I could just carry some lead.

Any thoughts on these or other options I've not considered?

    Sugar Cain,
out of the 3 i would choose rival. Dont do hard tanks they just take up way to much space and the tige hard tank system is a joke (really poor design) The pro sacks are so expensive and unnecessary. I actually made my own ballast system, granted it is pretty basic it is fast and was cheap. You could do it if you are not afraid to drill a hole in the bottom of your 50,000 toy Just do the rival and you'll be stoked!!

          Bog,

how did you do it yourself? Just drilled some holes, attach a pump and run the wires?

Does the Rival system usually go under the floor? Or do the sacks sit on top only?

The feeling of wakesurfing is something hard to describe, but everyone I've watched do it for the first time just starts to grin from ear to ear when they feel the wave pushing them and the rope goes slack.

The Rival system is an above floor system. It just automates the filling of your bags or tanks.

I did a combination of Rival and custom sacks. And have now seen false floors added over the custom sacks, which is the best ticket. At most you are going to get 700 a side in the rear. I also keep my front mostly filled when surfing. I have 200 on the right side side plus a 750 in the center. Then add 5-7 people all on the right side of the boat, and things are good.

I think if you add a rival you will use it a lot more often when wakeboarding than you thought. I took the advice of others and went as big as I could. Got scared a couple times, now could not ride without it.

Installation is not terrible. If you have a garage, and are mechanically inclined it is not big deal. Cutting that 2" hole in the bottom is a bit stressful, then it is all uphill from there . Take your time, have a friend help.

Do the Rival. Do the custom sacks. You can also 'upgrade' the Rival to 2000 GPH pumps... that is a good idea for my next year project. Those 700 Lb sacks take a long time to fill.

If you add a false floor above the custom sacks, why not just go with hard tanks that are less likely to pop than bags? Do you take out the original floor? How can a 700 pound bag fit with a Rival system, but I can't seem to get one that big in there now? Thanks for your thoughts.

The hard tanks only weigh 275 a side... so using them is not near as good. In the 24v if you run a sack to the very front on the shortest side all the way to the back, it will give you a volume that will get you about 700 Lbs. You can get the same sack and manually fill it, or only plumb one side... but generally that seems like a waste to me. If you are going to install a ballast system, install the full thing.

You can not fit anything under the floor.

                    CMB 22V,

You mean that you have a sack that is very low profile and long? I guess that to run a sack all of the length on the starboard (driver's) side from back all of the way forward would be about 7 feet long but only 10 inches high going under the seat...Is that what you mean?

When you say that you have 750 in the center, is that one in the walkway that you manually fill?

Hey Tall, small world seeing you on a different forum! I had the folks at Barefoot International make me up a custom Fat Sac for the port side. Runs from the rear locker up to the observers seat. All under the seats. We just wakesurf, so we just did that one side. They can do just about anything you can think of. My sac holds about 1,800 pounds of water. I posted a pic of James catching air and you can see the wake my '03 23 V throws with that sac.

                        Surfdad,

1800 pounds!!! WOW! I don't see getting that much weight into mine. It is only 12 inches high in there under the observer's seat. I then run into the cooler under the observer's seat as I go forward. If I did a sac 1 feet tall by 2 feet wide and 8 feet long, I only get 16 cubic feet of water, or about 1000 pounds. What are your dimensions?

Where is this picture of james?

Hey Tall, I'm not describing it well. It's one continuous sac from the rear compartment up under the seat and then stops at the cooler. Imagine a finger or extension from a sac that was the exact dimensions of the rear compartment up under the seats on the side. I hate to do this, but maybe I can type a representation of the side view:

                          ---------------
                          | |
                          | |
                          | ----------------------------------------
                          | |
                          -------------------------------------------------------

The larger part fills up the entire rear compartment, the finger or extension is all part of the same sac and extends forward under the seat up to the cooler. I don't know about the newer Tige's but on all of mine, the rear compartment forward to the cooler is open.

I had to reduce the picture of James, a better one is in my gallery.

Ok, so that didn't work. Think one sac that fills every square inch below the seats and the entire rear compartment. It's stepped where it extends up under the seats. Sorry I couldn't give a better visual.

Maybe this will help and sorry to waste the bandwidth. Two pictures, of the same sac. The first is of rear compartment, the sac fills up the whole compartment completely. Next post the extension.
