I use magic eraser all the time -- dry, on my phono needle (set the needle down twice, brush residue off).

But I would never use ME on boat vinyl and for gel coat (why use anything other than polish or rubbing compound of gel?).

And Tall, that is one nasty pic; I never would have guessed 10 seconds of rubbing would do that much damage.

I am tempted to do that...but it really doesn't hurt until minutes later, so that is kind of a bummer.

I wouldn't use it, only ever heard bad things about it.

The pH factor of Magic Erasers falls between 8 and 10 - alkaline enough to be considered a basic material.

I am not saying it is not an abrasive. It is a acutally a melamine foam which produces extremely fine "sanding" particles which are almost as hard as glass. So it is an extremely abrasive material. Thus wet the product and rub anything even skin and it will sand/remove/grind (what ever term you want to use) the stain/skin/grease away.

That seems sketchy. I don't know that I could get myself to do that. My needle is out of production and I'm quite fond of it. I'd hate to muff it up.

Melamine is some seriously nasty stuff.

I have used MEK (very gently, with lots of freshwater rinse afterward) on gelcoat to remove sticker residue and it works very well with no ill effects and no change in finish or shine. Adhesive just wipes right off.

Read up on the magic eraser phono needle cleaning. A lot of high enders use the same trick (dry, not wet). One of the threads out there has electron microscopy images of before and after. Amazing stuff. Two links as follows (lots of other Google hits):

I use a Zerodust after setting my needle (a Grado Gold or a Shure M97xE with JICO SAS) down on the dry ME a few times.

Speaking of phono cartridges, my then-infant son ripped the cantilever out of my last needle for my British Goldring cartridge about ten years ago. Out of production, can't find a replacement. Yet I still can't get rid of it, just in case....

So you have to clean that stain, you can use the vinegar to remove that, just apply a little amount of vinegar with a piece of cloth and leave it for few minutes then clean that with some cleaner.
