GuyRpm - look on page one of my link - you will see where someone else recommended that 2-part epoxy stuff. The backer board is called Starboard. I bought it at West Marine here in Houston. It was expensive - $40 for a small 30"x18" sheet.

Do we have a final $$ on this step yet?

I think he is doing some tweaking, as the hull had some flex when the step was clamped on and pressure applied. He is trying to figure out a better design, so it is not ready yet.

What Kimber said. I am in the process of designing a support that will support the middle of the step but it is going to do what I did not want to do which was touch the fiberglass. It will have rubber to keep it from rubbing the fiberglass but I did not want to touch the fiberglass. I am going to do what Kimber has done to his and put the support on the inside of my hull which if you are interested you can look at the link he posted on page 1 of this discussion. At the end of the day right now is it is not ready to pass along to anyone as I am not happy with its performance. This step is very important to my family because I have small kids who have to currently be very careful getting to the swim platform. Please be patient as I want everything to be perfect.

I'm beginning to wonder if the correct solution would be an integrated step-handle. A flat surface in the middle for your foot, with a traditional handle extending to either side. The whole thing could mount in the existing transom holes.

Would you be willing to sell just the mounting brackets I have a teak swim platform and think if the step was teak that would look kick *** I can make the deck it's self I just need the brackets. do think the hull flex would be taken care of if I put the brackets between the 2 attatchemnt points on the boat?

To resurrect on old post, when Guy built his step, he built two. I bought the other one from him back in the winter, and the first time we were able to use the boat was this past week (sad, I know). The step took some time to install, but it was worth it. Guy built an incredible step - it is impressive and solid. He always says that he over-engineered the thing - but I can tell it will def hold up for the long haul. We used it all last week and it held up great - even with adults stepping on it as well. No flex anywhere. I have 3 kids, oldest is 9, and they loved the step - I don't have to worry every time they climb up and down it. Now the step makes it easy for them. After almost breaking my own toe a couple of years ago, this step was a must. Thanks Guy!!!
